W. Gregg - JP - 1848
« on: Sunday 20 November 05 00:11 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for a "W. Gregg" who was a JP in 1848 somewhere in County Down - does anyone know if there are any online lists of JPs?   I am hoping that by finding this guy I can maybe work out where my gg grandfather Robert Reid McKnight came from in County Down.  W Gregg was listed as recommending Robert McKnight to the Royal Irish Constabulary and I read somewhere that this makes it likely that they came from the same area.

Further info. about Robert Reid McKnight in case it connects to anyone - born County Down about 1829 - entered RIC in 1848 - left RIC in 1857 - Victorian Police Force Australia 1859-1863 - NZ Police Force in Dunedin and Christchurch 1863-1871 - Head Bailiff Resident Magistrates Court Christchurch 1871-1890 - married Christchurch NZ 1871 to Eliza Pinnell Butcher - six children, Roberta Catherine 1873, Robert Reid 1877, Agnes Susannah? 1878, Eda Mary 1881, Unknown daughter c.1884, Lynton Stuart 1886.  He died in Christchurch NZ in 1890.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Regards, Bronwen (NZ)

Bronwen:
Here is your JP!

William GREGG  Esq. J.P.  Blaris of Derryvolgle; seneschal at Lisburn, charitable subscriber in 1836 parish works program in Lisburn; Director Ulster Railway 29 Oct 1853 V12 p39,40,41, 44, 45, 48, 50 OSM; DR*

Ros has an excellent site and you can search the Place Name index to get more info on Blaris and Lisburn. I did a quick look at McKnight and there are some listed.

Here is another site which might also be helpful: http://www.lisburn.com/history/memories_page.html

Hope you find something of use. By the way, my great grandfather was Robert Reid who lived in Rathfriland prior to 1900. Am still trying to find more info on him. He married Margaret Anne Mulholland in 1867.

Good luck,
Pat

Hi Pat

Robert Reid is a lovely name isn't it  Smiley  Thank you very much for the information, I will use that as a starting point to try and track down his birth.  The links you gave me will be very helpful too.
