I need help to decipher a name!
« on: Sunday 27 November 05 00:19 GMT (UK) »

I have been looking at the death certificate of my g/g/g/granny Julia Fyfe in August 1864 in Newtyle, Forfar.  Her fathers name was David Stormont, Farm servant deceased. Her mothers name was Jane Stormont, M.S.  ?? deceased. Can anyone help me with that name please?
I've managed to read everything else! Thanks.

Thanks Becky, but I am not very good with computers!  I've had lots of family and friends working on it today, and they think the word is Glendye. (It's definitely ye at the end) Not a surname I am familiar with, I'm afraid.  However, it was enough for me to go to scotsorigins to see what I could come up with.  I found a David Stormonth who married a Jean Glenday 27/11/1781 in Kingoldrum. From her age at death, Julia must have been born in 1786/7, so in the right age range.   I imagine that they could be the same as my David Stormont and Jane Glendye. What do you think? ... Sheila

Hi Sheila,

Where do you live? If there is an Internet Cafe anywhere near you take the certificate along to them, explain your problem and they should be able to upload it to the site for you. That is how I upload photographs. The alternative is to ask a young son of a neighbour to do it for you. The young ones now days know so much about computers.

Best Wishes, Christopher

Thanks Christopher. No Internet Cafes anywhere near here, I'm afraid!
But I'll have a chat with one of the young ones and see if they can help me.  Regards .. Sheila

Hi Sheila,

Do some Googling for Glendye surnames.  Here is a starter.
