Hi Looking through "Historic Hastings" by J Manwaring Baines, I noticed that most Hastings Fishermen had nicknames as few went by their proper name. A man may be christened Tom Smith, but few would know who was meant under that name; among his comrades he may be known by some other queer term as Tipper, Toller, Wintry, Podger, Weasel etc. Usually some story accounts for their origin and some are by no means complimentary. Knickname for Simmons was "Chummy"
Also this story appears under 'Smugglers and Smuggling' in the same volume: " A boat belonging to 'Karby' Simmonds - a fisherman who was well-known in his day-had been seized for having smuggled goods on board, and after the removal of the same, the boat in question was drawn to the Condemned Hole ' behind Beach Cottages, where all confiscated property of that sort was secured until a time of general delivery by sale. The boat had not been in its new situation long ere a party of smugglers proceeded to remove a false bottom which the Customs officers had not discovered in the boat, and beneath which some kegs of spirits other than those which had been seized were concealed. These were quickly shouldered in the broad light of day, and carried round the Castle Cliff over the space now occupied by 8 to 10 Breeds Place. To what further distance they were conveyed and in what place they were deposited is a secret known only to the ' free-traders ' themselves. Albeit, this exploit was never more to be repeated, for every boat seized after that was sawn asunder at midships, and its false bottom, if any, detected." Hope the above are of interest to you Chris in 1066Land (Hastings)

Hi Jean
Went to the County Records Office today at Lewes - noticed a transcription book for the 'Fishermans Church' in Hastings. Unfortunately it only covered the years 1917 - 1938, but there were 2 entries that may be of interest to you:
18th March 1923, Simmons Lily Mary 18th March 1923, Simmons Alice Louise Both daughters of William Simmonds (Fisherman) and Mary Louise Simmons of 7 Woods Passage, Hastings.
There were NO parish register transcripts for All Saints, so was unable to look for Charles Marriage to Ann Phillips in 1843.
Have now got the 1841 census for all of Hastings on CD if you want me to look for your fishermen ancestors - please advise who and where

Hi Jean
Thanks for taking the time to look for my Simmons. The family I'm most interested in are: 1851 Census : HO107/1635 folio 162 Address: 49 All Saints Street, Hastings. Charles Simmons. Head. Married, aged 30. Fisherman. Born Hastings. Ann Simmons. Wife. Married, aged 22. Born Hastings. Charles Simmons. Son. Aged 7. Born Hastings. Thomas Simmons. Son. Aged 4. Born Hastings. George Simmons. Son. Aged 2. Born Hastings. Would you look for them in 1841 please? Charles wasn't married at that time - I'd like to know where he was living and who his family were if posssble. Charles senior was my GGGGrandfather
This is the one and only Charles Simmons/Simmonds in Hastings in 1841
1841 Census for Hastings All Saints
SIMMONDS Richard, 71, Mariner, born in Sussex Sarah, 45, born in Sussex Charles, 21, Mariner, born in Sussex Alfred, 18, Mariner, born Sussex Elizabeth, 6, born Sussex GALLOP Hannah, 69, born Sussex
Hope that takes you back another couple of Generations

Hi Jean
Have looked at the transcription again -
Still the same info - All Saints, Hastings - very few streets are listed, but would think it is All Saints Street between Britt Lane and Elphick Cottages and Strongs Passage; in the parish of All Saints - if you see what I mean.
Have you noticed I have found my disks that contain Burial Register Transcriptions for Hastings:
Burial Register Transcriptions Hastings, All Saints 1813 - 1853 Hastings, St Clements 1803 - 1856 Hastings, St Mary-in-the-Castle 1828 - 1857
I bet you want a few lookups / names out of them?

I am searching the Elphick name in Sussex and noted you had a few messages on the board with that name in them
I live in Canada and do not have access, obviously, to the archives in jolly ole England.
If there any info you can give me to shed some light onto this very dark brick wall I have hit?

Hi there Judy
Welcome to Rootschat - nice to have you on board
If you would like to post details of what you have got, and what you are looking for to knock holes in the dark brick wall - I will then consult my Oracle to see how I can help you.

You were enquiring about the Simmons family of Hastings - Charles Simmons, wife Ann (nee Phillips) born 1819 was my Great Great Grandfather.
Which line are you descended from - Charles and Ann had 7 children.
I am descended from Charles Simmons bap January 24 1844.
