Birth/Marriage Charles(Charlie) GREEN Paddock Wood/Capel
« on: Sunday 27 November 05 11:31 GMT (UK) »

I hope that someone out there can help. I am doing very well in my family tree, but I am stuck past my maternal Grandfather Green (still living) who was born in Paddock Wood or Capel. All he can remember is that his father was called Charlie or Charles Green and that his mother's name was Ada.  I believe that Charles(Charlie) was born in Paddock Wood. My grandfather remembers staying with Charles's parents (his grandparents) at Stace Cottages (Paddock Wood). I have found my grandfathers birth record (BMD) and he was born on 16/02/1920 (district Tonbridge). It states his mothers Maiden name as Wells. I prior contact found a birth in the Tudeley cum Capel parish register for a child born to Charles and Ada Green in the 1920's, but he cannot remember any more. I have found a Charles and Charlie Green on the 1901 census in Paddock Wood and Capel, but I have no way of knowing if either is my Great Grandfather. I have not been able to find an Ada Wells in the area as yet.

Ada died around the 1940's and is supposed to be buried in Paddock Wood old cemetery. She died in a fire. Charles (Charlie) is buried in Tonbridge Cemetery. I believe he died in the 1960's. There are no headstones that I can find.

My Grandfather one half brother that I know of and also had sisters and a brother.

I really hope that someone can help me fill in the gaps with this information as I am finding it very frustrating.

Regards

Julia

Hi Julia,

Welcome to rootschat  Cool  Cool

I think that the first thing you would need to do now is to get hold of the marriage cert for Ada and Charles. This would give you their parent's names and their age at marriage. Hopefully, with this info, you will then be able to locate them on the 1901 census (provided they were born by then...)

I have trawled through the BMD transcripts from 1910 through to 1920 and can find no record of a marriage of Charles Green to Ada Wells anywhere in the country let alone locally, so I do not know when they married. There must be something I am doing wrong!

Oh, that's a shame. I don't have access to complete BMD indexes so can't help you by lending you another pair of eyes.
If there really isn't any marriage registration for these 2, I can think of 2 possibilities:
a. They weren't actually married
b. Ada was a widow when marrying Charles and would have married under a different name - which is not impossible, as you talk about a half brother. Do you know whose child the half brother was? Did he have a different surname?

Did you also search for her death? Age at death might help you find a birth registration (there are quite a few Ada Wells' on the 1901 census in Kent, actually)

One thing that isn't too clear to me: You say your grandfather had an elder brother, born in the mid-20s. Should that read in the 1910's?

Sorry, just questions - no help  Sad

Sorry to confuse, it was his younger brother who was born in the 1920's.  I have run out of credits on my BMD and unfortunately cannot afford to top it up at the moment. Thanks for your help anyway. I will try and find out if Grandad's half brother was a Green or not. That may prove very useful. All I know about him is that he spent an awful lot of his time in Lewis Prison.

My Mum and Dad have just given me some more information that they have not remebered before. Grandad was the eldest child. He had 2 younger sisters and a younger brother. When Ada Green (nee Wells) died, Charles re-married and went on to have at least 2 sons. They would have been born in the 1930's. Now I have totally confused everyone, including myself!
