John Boatwright - Born 1879 - Norwich Norfolk.
John Boatwright enlisted in the Army on an ' Attestation form on the 29th. June 1896. with the number 3568.
He was transferred to the Northamptonshire Regiment on the 19th. February 1898.
-:- and from the above date I cannot trace him.

Hi Rosemary! In plain language its like an application form - attestation forms were filled out by men and women when they enlisted - a standard government form completed in the hundreds of thousands it gives his name, date and place of birth, next of kin, and, at the bottom, the signature
Do you have any family stories? - he probably was in the Boer War - if you Goggle Northamptonshire Regiment - you'll find where abouts they were at that time then you can find out which battles he was involved in !!

He would most likely have served in the Boer War but, if he survived and was not disabled, would also have served in WW1 even if he had left the Regular Army before 1914. You might find his Medal Card or, if he died in that war, a record at the Commonwealth War Graves site.

Hi Hack!
I tried both of those and I couldn't find him - that's why I asked about the number!! even if he had two numbers - the first one should still be on his medal card shouldn't it??

There is a medal card for a John Boatwright, but a different regiment.
Would have been 35 at start of war, so like hack i also think he would have served, do we know anyone who might have a casualty list or roll of honour for the northants in boer war??

In those days the service numbers were related to that soldier's service in that regiment. So, when he moved his regiment in 1898 it changed. If he was discharged between then and 1914 and re-enlisted or was conscripted then he would again have a different number. Much later the Army decided on a life number. Exceptions - if a National Serviceman signed on as a Regular his number changed - also if he was commissioned as an officer. But that was very much later, even after WWII. I served as a regular in a Regiment and then in Corps , then left the army but was recalled for the Suez emergency as a specialist but my army number was always the same.
