COOGAN family of Everton/Liverpool

I'm currently researching my great grandfathers family, I posted a message here before, but since then I've come up with more info.
The family name was Coogan, they came to England from Ireland in the 1800's, and settled in Everton. My great grandfather was John Joseph Coogan, later to become John Joseph Duffy when he changed his name in Liverpool. I'm not sure how many siblings he had, but he definitely had a sister, I think she was called Nellie, and during the 2nd world war, she had a pub on liverpool docks, from what I've heard it was a popular place!!
Anyway, I'm looking for information on how to find out about name changes, also if anyone can help further with the pub name on liverpool docks, and finally their parents details etc, unfortunately I have no dates, except John was born sometime around 1900-1904. However I can find no birth record on freebmd.
I hope someone can provide further info, or help as to where I can go next.
