Would the real Richard Thursby stand up please!
« on: Wednesday 30 November 05 15:53 GMT (UK) »

I am looking for the original Richard Thursby / Thirsby can anyone help please?

My great, great grandparents were Hector Urquhart & Margaret Campbell Graham who met and married in Aberdeen before settling in South Shields in the early 1850's. I can understand how among their 55 grandchildren they would have had grandchildren called Margaret Graham Shiel, Margaret Graham Freeman, Margaret Graham Jeffels, Margaret Graham Urquhart, & Margaret Graham Robson, but they also had grandchildren called Richard Thursby Jeffels (born c1871) & Richard Thirsby Urquhart (born c1893). He must have been a really nice guy for the family to want their children to have his name, but I have no idea of who he was or where he came from! Any suggestions?

Good family searching to you all,
Patsy

Hi
Did Hector and Margaret not have a son called Richard as he could have been Richard Thursby Graham...

My theories are either
1) There was an importnat man around at the time called Richard Thursby and both sets of parents named their child after him
OR
2) Either Hector or Margaret had an ancestor called Richard Thursby and it continued down the line.

I've doen a google on Rcihard Thursby and there is a peer called Richard Thursby - maybe they were related to some Lord somewhere and found out so named their children after him!!

Hope you find the answer,
Claudia

Dear Claudia,

Thank you for your reply, and for doing the 'Google' search. I had not come across peer. I don't think we have any titled connections as the family all seem to be butchers, bakers and shipwright (haven't found a candlestick maker yet!)

Unfortunately Hector did not have a brother called Richard, they were called John, Roderick, Walter & Kenneth, and Hector & Margaret did not name any of their children Richard they were:-

Margaret Collie Urquhart - married 13.12.1863 - William Foster Shiel
Susan[nah] Urquhart - married 21.6.1868 - Edward Dockwray Freeman
Isabella Urquhart - married 11.9.1864 - William Stephen
Christiana Urquhart - married - Richard Jeffels
Hector Urquhart - died aged 4 - 13.12 1855
Hugh Urquhart - married 10.1.1885 - Mary Jane Dryden
Hector Urquhart - married 18.8.1879 - Mary Jane Berry
& married 10.2.1886 Ellen Berry

Sorry for the abrupt ending but the previous message for some reason in the middle of typing it suddenly 'posted' it self! Either finger trouble or paws on the keys!

cont.
Jane Urquhart - married 15.4.1882 Edward Middleton Robson
Hannah Mary Urquhart born 1863 & died 1889

So you can see not a Richard Thursby/Thirsby in sight! Even back in Scotland the only surnames names I have come across are Urquhart / McKenzie / Graham / Simpson.

Never mind he might to come to light some day, probably when I am not looking for him!

Thanks once again for spending the time trying to solve the mystery.
Best Wishes, Patsy
