A Pub in Ware - COMPLETED THANK YOU
« on: Friday 02 December 05 11:42 UTC (UK) »

Would anyone know if a "public house" called The Vine in Middle Row Ware is still standing?

One of my ancestors left it to his daughter in his will in 1848 (rather a forward thinker for his time, I'd say, as the sons only received houses and farms etc!!) Grin Grin

Any information appreciated

Thanks

Di

Hi Di

Here is some history, from Hertfordshire Inns & Public Houses an historical gazeteer, by Graham JOLLIFFE & Arthur JONES.

Earliest known reference 1659, when it was owned by Henry HALL and Samuel REEVE. The house was enlarged in the mid 18th century, and it was sold by Caleb HITCH, bricklayer of Ware to William LUCAS brewer of Hitchin.  Soon after the name of the pub was changed to The Clarendon.

In the 1830's the house contained a club room and a billiard room.  Rebuilt in 1899 and renamed The Wine Lodge in about 1905.

Hi Rick,

Thanks for that info. It makes it sound like it wasn't the same pub.

The wording in the will (1848) was:

bequeath to daughter... tenament in Middle Row and adjoining public house called the Vine in town of Ware.. currently leased for a period of twenty five years from 25 March 1828 for £25 per year to Edmund Bertram (? name)

Maybe she only received the house and he was trying to explain where it stood??

The old wills are rather confusing.

Oh well, it would have been nice to own a pub - I will try and find out more.

Regards
