I am looking for my great grandmother, Katherine Margaret Probert who was reportedly born on a boat going to India in 1881. Her father was William Probert from Cardiff and her mother died giving birth. Somewhere along the line Katherine Margaret married a man called Charles Grey, although her children were all called Price, and she died in Hertfordshire in 1962. Could someone please have a look in the 1891 census to see if there is any sign of William and Katherine Probert in Herts. She was living in Bishops Stortford at the time of her death, with her daughter, and she had married a Henry Andrews in the meantime. They are proving very elusive. thanks Diane

Struggling with this at the moment - but strangely I have found a John A Probert born in 1878 in India to John Probate who was in the army and had children born everywhere!!
Will keep looking - do you know when William was born?
Cheers
Keith

Hi Keith, thanks for looking. It is a bit of a mystery. My mother's aunt says her mother was born at sea on the way to India, and that her father's name was William Probert. She doesnt know more than that, it was never discussed I gather. I have a marriage for a William John Probert in the Bengal marriages list, to Mabel E Creais in 1876, but i have no way of knowing if it was him. I am writing to the Register of shipping and seamen in Cardiff this week to see if i can get a birth and death certificate, but i was just hoping that he might have returned to Britain after that trip and turn up somewhere in the census. thanks Diane
