Durkin and Ellicott - Help please!
« on: Monday 06 September 04 16:50 UTC (UK) »

Is there anyone else who has an interest in Durkin and
Ellicott.I gave up on this branch of my family quite a while
ago as I could'nt seem to get any further with them and I
feel such a traitor. They are dear to me,it's the only Irish
line I have, and especially because they were rag and bone gatherers, the most interesting occupation of any in
my family tree. My dad said they came from Mayo. aunt
said Sligo(wonderful).James Durkin wife Mary(Ellicott) came to England between 1849-1853 with their daugter
Mary b.1849 Ire. and settled in Dudley Worcs.

Hi Jacquelineve

Sorry we haven't been able to help you so far on this one.

Have you made any progress,  or do you have any further details that could help someone to find what you are looking for?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

Hello Ticker

Thankyou for taking time and interest.
I do have a little extra info(tiny really) according to census, both James-Mary Durkin(Ellicott) were born abt.
1820, also they had twins Bridget(g.gran)-James b.1855
Eng.
Did Irish families follow a naming pattern?

               Thanks again
                                 Jacquelineve.

Hi Jacquelineve

No problem.  I wonder if changing your title to refer to Durkin might help you get a response.  Please let me know if you want me to do that for you.

Best wishes

Hi: I've noticed your interest in the name Durkin ... this is a family name of mine too. Just a few comments: don't get too hung up on the spelling, this varies enormously and has little significance except that you must check every possible variation in indexes. The surname is mostly from Sligo and Mayo. Check every possible census return for your family: in the 1901 census my gt gt grandmother kindly decided to let us all know at last that she was from Sligo after all. If you are lucky, one relative may be more specific still and give a more detailed location name.
My Durkins came from Sligo around the time of the famine and eventually settled in Durham. My gt gt gt grandfather was a tailor, John/Owen Durkin born c 1790. His daughter Mary, my gt gt grandmother, and brothers Patrick and Matthew settled in the Easington Lane area of Durham. Mary - and this might be of interest to you, was allegedly twin to a brother...
Good luck in your research

Hello Daran

Thankyou for taking interest in my posting, still have'nt
got any further with my Durkins.
        I've tried all variants.
Mine came over between 1849 (1st child b. Ire) and 1853(2nd
b. Dudley Worcs) and stayed in Dud.
     These were my g.g.grandparents.
Unfortunately, in the two cens.in which they are listed before
they died, they only give Ire.as their birthplace.
I don't suppose you have come across g.g.grans
maiden name have you? I've been in contact with someone
else, who is researching this name, and they're having about
as much luck as me.
My g.gran and her brother were the twins Bridget -
James.  Mary and Thomas were the elder siblings.

              Thanks again

            Jacqueline.
