GEDCOM HELP PLEASE
« on: Monday 06 September 04 19:14 BST (UK) »

Can anyone please explain to me (as simply as possible as I'm really not very computer literate) how to formulate my family tree in what I can only describe as a Generation List?  I've received data from other people in such format via e-mail before I acquired Family Historian II but can only see the proxy boxes format in the instruction book and can't see reference, in the longer user tutorial, to what I want to do.

I'd be so grateful for some help.   Thanks.

Hi Forest,

I know what you mean as I'm not the best at technical stuff.  I also use Family Historian and to be honest it's taking me ages to get my head around it.  I printed off the user manual all 141 pages of it and followed the tutorial as best I could.  They do have a website with a forum where you can post any questions, there is also a link to contact Calico Pie for individual advice.  I had a problem which I contacted them about and I received an email back off them and they explained quite clearly how I could solve my problem.  The site address is www.family-historian.co.uk, you can link to them via the help option on the programme.

Good Luck

Thanks very much Jan - I'll have to try e-mailing them.
Thought I was going great guns with it until I wanted
to  list everything out and in all that tutorial information
there doesn't seem to be what I need.

No doubt they'll have the simplest of explanations!

Thanks again

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for  ... but FH can generate what it calls "Family Group Sheets" .
To obtain these  click on reports in menu bar select Family Groups

at the screen that opens up you have two smaller windows. The window to the left has all of your records and the window on the right is empty.

Above the left window is a set of tabs select the middle tab "Families" and you can then select individual families with the mouse and by clicking on the arrow symbol in the middle of the two windows copy the family details to the right window. Clicking on the arrow symbol that looks like >>  copies all of your families

When satisfied that you have the family records that you want click on OK and your report is generated

On the far right of your screen you then have the option to print your report (click on "print" button) or if you want to save the record to send to someone else click on the "save report as" button which gives you three options html (for web or transfer) Rich text Format (RTF) for any decent word processor program or finally as a text file.

Another method is to create a custom report ....you can do this either on individuals or on families from what I could  see.

As before select the report from the menu bar and at the appearance of the two windows at the bottom you have a button "add using query"  by selecting this you can cusomize the report by numerous means ... one of which is birthdays  which does a pretty reasonable job of sorting out the generations .... and you can then save this style of report amongst the custom report styles.

You are not restricted with what you can add as a query you can sort out the information in a considerable number of ways and save the report styles for future use

I think what you want is the Descendant outline in the Miscellaneous Reports menu.   You might need to turn on all the event information if you want that on the report.

You might like to come and visit the Family historian User Group at
www.fhug.org.uk which is a Family Historian Help site, which like this site is free to join and has lots of resources for the Family historian user.
