Commander in Chief's cert - what for?
« on: Sunday 04 December 05 09:40 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,

I have a question for the WW2 specialists out there.

My grandfather Albert Edwin Taff (285162) served in the Pioneer Corps in WW2. I have him mostly with 142 Co, where he is a Captain and then a Major.

On May 1945 while in Udem/Germany, the war diary has this entry:
'Lieut.-Col. Wheatley, Commanding No. 45 Group Pioneer Corps, visited unit to present a Commander in Chief's certificate for Good Conduct to Capt. A E Taff'

I understand this cert is not interesting enough to be published in the London Gazette. Does somebody have any idea what kind of reason those certs would have been awarded for?

Thanks a lot for any help.

Kev, thanks heaps for looking.

I did actually have this, and I was over the moon when I found it too. The Gazette is a great search facility, isn't it! From there, I made contact with the Pioneer Corps association and there is a marvellous chap there, Norman Brown, who provided me with the company names he served with. Which was just great - I wouldn't ever have found out by myself!! (I'm not officially NOK either).
However 1943 is the first date I can trace AE Taff in the war. I have no idea where he was before that. I don't suppose he would have been mentioned anywhere prior to being a 2nd Lt? Perhaps he didn't join from the start anyway... He was born in 1907 so already a little old when the war started.

Writing this, I'm realising I have 2 numbers for him: 285162 and 285102... I suspect a typo somewhere... Probably my own! Off I am to check the documents I have.

Very grateful for your help, Kev.

No problem, it says it is a list of cadets who are being made 2nd lts, could he have been doing some form of retraining beforehand.

We'll probably never know... What's a cadet, anyway?  Roll Eyes
I notice that all the men named in the Gazette at the same time have numbers that follow each other: 285102, 285103, 285103 etc. and yet they are in alphabetical order. Do I conclude this number was given them at that very moment in 1943? Would this be something like an officer number as opposed to whatever number they had before being officers? (That, is, if a 2nd Lt is an officer!). Or would this mean they hadn't joined before?

Well, not only am I asking more questions, but I feel they are hard to understand too. You wouldn't speak French or German, would you?  Tongue

tati, they look like the numbers that were given to a cadet at the officer cadet school, all officer cadets are of equal rank when under officer training, they are then given a number, after training they are allocated to their regts/corps as either 2/Lt or Lt,many if not all universities had officer training units, mack
