http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk is one possibility, though they don't have images of the Old Parish Records (OPR) available yet. They say they should become available this year, but they've previously and repeatedly given wildly optimistic estimates about this. However they do have the indexes for the OPR, so you could (maybe) find the date (of christening) there. 1854 is a bit of an unlucky year to be born in - for us doing the researching, that is! The civil registration of births, marriages and deaths started on Jan. 1st 1855 in Scotland, and contains a lot more information. I've heard that the percentage of births recorded in the old parish rrecords (which was already quite low) decreased greatly in the last few years of the OPR system - especially in urban areas like Paisley. So you might be out of luck.
You pay £6 for 30 credits on Scotlandspeople; looking at the result of a search e.g of births in the OPR costs 1 credit (if there's less than about 25 entries found in the search). Fetching an image of the parish register costs another 5 credits (when it becomes available). You can however pay £10 to order a photocopy by post.
The indexing is limited to name, date and parish - you can't specify parent's names (which is ridiculous, as the parents names have been transcribed). Here is an example of the following search Criteria : Surname: "TOWRS"; Forename: "WILLIAM"; Parish: Abbey (paisley); Sex: Male; Date From: 1 January 1766; Date To: 31 December 1767
No. Date Surname Forename Parent Names/Frame No Sex Parish GROS Data Image Extract
1 10 Sep 1767 TOWRS WILLIAM MICHAILL TOWRS/AGNESS STEWART FR803 M ABBEY (PAISLEY) 559/00 0002 No Image
You can specify five parishes at at time, as I recall - there are 4 parishes in the town of Paisley - Paisley (High); Paisley (Middle); Paisley (Low) and Abbey (Paisley).
When you buy 30 credits, your access expires after a few days, but those credits can be used the next time you pay for access. As well as the OPR, the 1851 and 1841 censuses would be relevant for you - again, we are promised that they'll be available 'very soon'.
Maybe you can find all these registers on microfilm at the LDS Family History Centers?

I have a James Harper born about 1825 Paisley.
