Where is Winkcoute in Warwickshire
« on: Saturday 26 July 08 20:04 BST (UK) »

In an 1851 census, a birthplace has been given as Winkcoute.  Is/was there such a place?
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Ziggie,

Seeing as Catherine King is the only person giving Winkcoute as her birth place in the whole census, I somehow doubt it!

I'm wondering if it could be Wilnecote
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/STS/Tamworth/index.html
Quote
Wilnecote, a large village, two miles SSE of Tamworth, has a small railway station, and its township comprises about 1000 acres, and 824 souls, including Dosthill House, now unoccupied, and many scattered dwellings. Wilnecote Hall is the pleasant seat of Major Bamford. Sir Robert Peel, Bart, is lord of the manor, and owner of a great part of the soil.

Doesn't really look like it on the image but then the census was taken in Islington ...

There's no such place,Wilnecote sounds about right, probably down to accent.

Thank you for your suggestion.  The problem I am having is finding the marriage of John King and Catherine *****.  It obviously happened between 1841 and 1851 and as John was giving his occupation as a Railway Labourer, he possibly was in Warwickshire when he met/married Catherine.

Hi Ziggie,
The nearest I can get is the  Village of Wilmcote in Warwickshire. It lays three miles north of Stratford and was the birth place of Mary Arden. Also I recollect a Wyncote around Leamington Spa, but not sure where exactly. It could be, as already suggested, a question of accent.
Best wishes,

 Could this be the marriage

1846
KING * John BULLOCK Catherine Lichfield, St Michael Lichfield
KING * John ORME Catherine Lichfield, St Michael Lichfield
same reference . Catherines second marriage?

Hi
It's probably Wilnecote as the local pronuniciation is 'wincut'!

Hi
There is a Wincot (also known as Willicote) - just south of Stratford near Preston on Stour.

Hi Genie2004

Sorry I haven't come back for some time but have been trying to trace the marriage you suggested.  It seems highly probable that John could have married any Catherine between London and Warks if he was a railway employee!!  John married again between 1851 and 1861 as he has a different wife on the 1861 census.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions - it just goes to show that different dialects produce different spellings.
