If you find that an ancestor has been transported as a convict to Australia. What can you do to find out more about this. What happened to them in Australia etc. Was passage paid for them to return after sentence was complete. Is there anywhere I can find out more on the net? Any help or advice welcome.

Hi Anjo, 
there are quite a number of sites dealing with convict transportation and history - tracing your convict ancestors etc.
The best way to find them is to simply put 'convicts in australia' into Google and you should get a good selection.

Aaron's response is A1 but thought I would give you this site as containing lots of great links in case you are swamped by the volume of sites thrown up by Google.
Cora Num's site http://www.coraweb.com.au/ She also has books available detailing many more sources for Australian Genealogy, but heaps of convict links on line as well.
Convict ancestors are much easier to trace in Oz than free settlers, as every part of their lives was documented. If your convict came on the 1st or 2nd fleet even better, as they have been researched many times. If you are in this category let me know and I will give you the authors of a couple of brilliant books researching these folks.
