While "squinting over a fiche" keying some data for FreeCEN I came across Mr Inkpen - SchoolMaster. I checked the 1881 Census and found many Inkpens. I then checked the IGI, and looking at only extracted entries, the earliest I could find was the late 1700s. I then wondered if the name had, in fact come from the occupation (as with e.g. Tailor). Does anyone know the origins of this name?
There is a village of Inkpen on Berkshire/Oxfordshire border somewhere. That makes me suspect that the name could have geographical (rather than occuaptional) origins.

Thanks Pauline - interesting - I initially laughed and moved on, but find that I am now interested in the name. The census was from Wiltshire but I'll check back and see where he was born.
