I'm looking for information about the BRIGGS family who lived in Cookham at least from 1940 - 1968. I believe I share an ancestor with Violet BRIGGS nee LONG the wife of Wing Commander Edward Featherstone BRIGGS. I know very little about the family except that a son Michael Featherstone BRIGGS was killed during WW2 and I believe is buried or commemorated in Cookham Churchyard. Violet would have been born about 1897. Her father was Charles Edward LONG, the youngest son of Edwin LONG, RA. 1829-1891

There are three churchyards in Cookham, one in Cookham village, one in Cookham Rise and one in Cookham Dean in addition there is a cemetry at the Lower Cookham Road/Long Lane junction.
(The church in the Rise is Methodist and I think there may not be many graves there)
Have you any idea which part of Cookham you are looking at ?
I come from Cookham and usually visit my mother there on a weekly basis but I am 'convalescent' at present and unable to drive, if you are still looking I will be happy to help in a few weeks

Thank you for your reply. According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Site - Michael BRIGGS is buried in Cookham Parish Cemetery - Section F Row F Grave 6.
It's really his mother Violet BRIGGS nee LONG or any of his siblings that I am more interested in. I am following her line in the hope that I can find someone from the family who may know something about the ancestry of her grandfather, Edwin LONG RA. I believe we share an ancestor further back but I need some confirmation.

Thank you very much for that information. I was in Cookham early in August - saw the war memorial inscription which includes Michael BRIGGS but had assumed that the seat was in the churchyard so of course missed that. I didn't know that he was their only child - so that was very helpful.
There's an exhibition in Bristol at the moment which includes one of Edwin Long's paintings - so I'm still interested in that aspect of the family.
Do you know of any local obituary to Mrs BRIGGS?

Hello Charlotte,
Thank you for replying. As I understand it, Violet and her brother, Hubert Kildare LONG were the children of Charles Ernest LONG and his first wife, Ethel Victoria GOODE who were married in 1892 and finally divorced in 1910 having both unsuccessfully petitioned for divorce in 1904 and 1905.
Charles Ernest LONG subsequently married a Gladys May NIXON or McEWAN in 1912
Charles Ernest LONG was the 6th and youngest child of Edwin LONG RA and Margaret AITON who had been married in Rome in 1853.
Edwin LONG was born in Bath in 1829, the son of James & Eliza LONG and James, his father, was born in Bristol in 1801, the son of James & Elizabeth LONG.
I have the Will of Edwin's Grandfather, James LONG who died in Bath in 1850, aged 70, and I believe him to be a younger brother of my 3 x g grandfather, Samuel LONG, who was born in Bitton in about 1778.
My own grandfather always claimed a relationship with Edwin LONG and this all seems to fit.
I'm curious where you fit in - I only have the one child for Violet & Edward Featherstone BRIGGS - were there more or did Michael have an offspring?
