Regiment Queries - stinkers!
« on: Tuesday 06 December 05 15:36 UTC (UK) »

Hi all, does anyone know which regiment would have been at Number 16 IBD in August 1917 or even where No 16 is?  It is on some of my grandad's army paperwork & is signed by (looks like) a Capt. R Roussell.

Also in August 1919 grandad is now at the Camp Hospital, Newtownards, Co. Down, Ireland.  Does anyone have an inkling of which regiment could have been stationed here?

Again this is from some of my grandad's army paperwork, & the next page says he re-enlisted to 5/8/1920, but doesn't say what regiment, how thoughtless!  This seems to have been signed by H Hobson Colt or Caft & place is given as 'Nards' which I take to be Newtownards.

Any help or advice gratefully received.  Regards, TonyR.

PS. grandad started in the Royal Irish Fusiliers & then to 2nd Batt. The Essex, probably around 1900.  However I don't think the Essex would have been stationed in Ireland in 1919 so I guess I'm looking for an Irish Regiment.

Hi Mack, we have been discussing him on the Boer War posting by Izabel.  He is John Rooney & it looks increasing likely he was in The Essex for the Boer War & not The Royal Irish Fusiliers as I first thought.  I'm trying out all the leads I can find in his paperwork & Ian Hook the curator at The Essex museum is being very helpful.  Thanks, TonyR.

Here's a site I haven't seen before!

http://www.irishsoldiers.com/Research/archive_list.htm

On the outbreak of war the Headquarters Council of the Ulster Volunteer Force offered its complete medical organisation to the War Office in the form of a fully equipped hospital for the treatment of sick and wounded soldiers. The offer was accepted and this establishment was formally opened at the begining on 1915.

The main hospital was based near Queen's University Belfast. Other smaller hospitals were established near Craigavon, other parts of Belfast and Gilford.
