Internet Genealogy Research
« on: Tuesday 06 December 05 22:24 UTC (UK) »

This request was posted on the Stonehaven Genealogy mailing list - would anyone be interested in participating in this survey?

A PhD study is underway at the Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, examining Internet family history resources and their users. This will investigate the users themselves, how users view both e-genealogical resources and libraries, and how these resources are used within the research process. An eventual aim of the project is to highlight methods of promoting the "added value" of UK Local Studies Library Collections, increasing their visibility to users online. The research also aims to
identify, categorise and examine the available resources: developing specific evaluative criteria and promoting increased awareness and understanding within the library community in order to maintain a quality level of service for genealogical researchers in libraries.

The first stage of the project is a 5-minute online survey, available at:

http://www.researchingegenealogy.co.uk/

This hopes to gather more information about anyone accessing UK information online for their family history research. Please pass this information on to anyone else who might be interested.

If you require any further information, please contact prs.friday[AT]rgu.ac.uk

Hello happed_in_mist,

Thank you for alerting us to this survey.

I have completed the survey (it's short and quickly completed) and I hope that many other RootsChatters will also complete it.

The student is certainly fortunate to have Dr Nick Barratt (genealogist on the BBC's "Who Do You Think You Are?") as an adviser.

Regards,

JAP

This survey is an excellent example of how such surveys should be conducted on the net.
Very often the student simple asks people to participate without giving details of their university etc. and hope that people will trust them.
In this case the website gives all the details and enables one to check it is authentic.
Cheers

Very interesting research.

The profile of family history researchers will change on the back of internet resources coming online.  People like myself who are interested but are of an age were work takes up all our time and can't get to the more "traditional" archives use teh internet as a lifeline.

I hope you get lots of interest from Rootschatters - the survey only takes about 3 minutes.
