I recently replied to a request and diligently typed in the details from the census as found on ancestry.com. But my reply was deleted for breching copyright rules. I acknowledged that the work was crown copyright (as requested) and would like to know what I did wrong. Someone later added more or less the same details as I had but there reply was not deleted. This has now put me off trying to help others - can you restore my faith please?

Hi Sue. I know how you feel I had the same thing happen to me. You get one person tell you one thing and another tell you something else. Just keep plugging away. It could be like Tati said. rick

I was trying to help people who had not had any replies to their posts - but will be very reluctant to do so now, which is a shame as I am overjoyed when I receive information.
I read through all the copyright stuff before I put the posting on and still can't see what I did wrong.

Hi, there,
Ive sent you both a message - don't let it put you off - most of us have received these warnings at various times and it shouldn't be too difficult to sort out.

Not really, because that would impede other people from helping- they wouldn't have a clue what had already been found and sent by message. The beauty of this site is that there are so many different people with different resources who can all offer different types of help on one request.
Honestly, it isn't a problem when you get the knack of what you can and can't do. I have helped several people who had just got hold of the wrong end of the stick, sometimes on a very small point.
The warning message does sound unpleasant but it's not personal - as I said, most of us have had them and it is a horrible feeling to receive one but the problems can be sorted.

I was quite concerned when the message (or copyright) notice said that I may be locked out of rootschat. I certainly don't want that to happen. It is a wonderful sight that has helped me a lot in my research.

Not my place to say so, Sue, but don't think that will happen at the moment

Sue,
Sorry to hear that the removal of one of your posts for copyright violation caused you to feel upset. The sheer volume of posts that need to be looked for potential copyright violations is enormous. We used to modify the offending posts and send the poster a personal message advising them what the problem was. However, it takes a huge amount of time to do this.
If you provide information from a census, you must provide the information from what you see on the image and not from any index or other transcribed source. Copyright of the source should be acknowledged.
We would like to thank everyone for their help and assistance to others - you all provide a fantastic service!
Happy Christmas to one and all.
Best wishes Copyright-Editor
