William Gabriel 101st Royal Bengal Fusiliers
« on: Wednesday 07 December 05 19:42 UTC (UK) »

I`m looking to find info on my William Gabriel of 101st Bengal Fusiliers. 1860/1870
I have found 4 off his children &  obtain 3 birth certs
Elizabeth born 1861
Rose Ann born 1862 died 1862
Lavinia born 1865
Laura born 1867

William is also recorded along with children back in Liverpool via 1871 census where he is now a Chelsea pensioner
I can`t find him via India office or national Archives any ideas?

The National Archives soldiers (who received a pension) index on the internet only goes up to 1854. Those retiring after that date still have their records - attestation papers in particular at The National Archives. Do you mean you can't find him in the internet index or you have not been able to find his attestation papers at The National Archives itself?
William in 1871 was very young to have been a Chelsea pensioner. Had he been disabled?

As William Gabriel died in 1872 aged 33 he won't be on The National Archives internet index of soldiers who had finished their military service and received a pension by 1854. There are millions of records at The National Archives (100 miles of shelving just for records, and shelves and shelves of catalogues to try and find the records from). Very little of The National Archives holdings are indexed on the internet.

The National Archives does have research guides on the Internet

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=14&j=1
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=16&j=1

are probably the most useful for you.

Hi Valda
I was just told by loo that you are a wealth of infomation when it comes to the National Archives in the UK.  So, thought I'd pick your brain a bit, if that's okay. I just recently joined the chat, and have a heading " Looking for a needle in a hay stack" in the beginners chat. If you have time, will you look at what I'm trying to accomplish, and see, if you can lead me in the right directions. I live on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, and it's sooooo difficult doing blind searches from a computer and the internet. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you
