Hi,  I took  a look at the 1841 and there are several possiblities.  So I tried to find any William born abt 1839 on any of the census to  help tracking backwards. The only one that made sense was the 1891  William Hooton with wife Maria and several children. (this one has him as born 1839 in Derby)
I found the same couple with a son Edward in 1871 but couldn't find them in the 1881 and then had to try various variations on surname but still no joy but I found a marriage of a William Hooton to a Maria Farnsworth in Jun qtr 1870 in Derby.  Great I though until I realised that their only child Edward on the 1871 was age 5.. So could he be her son before they married or his from his first marriage. Then I had to stop myself as this might not be the right William in the first place.

If you could give me more details on your William, any other census details you have on him and I'll see what I can dig up for you ok. It may be that the only way forward is to get a marriage cert and at least establish his fathers name but if you have anything else of use to add then we might not have to go to that expense.

All the best and Merry Christmas to you.

Angela

Sorry I took so long to get back to you but my internet connection crashed.
I have wireless broadband and its a bit temperamental at times.

Any  way. Back to your William. All I would say is tread careful with him as I can only find him on a few of the census and his age keeps changing.

1891 Census

William Hooton  52  Hawker   b. Derby
Maria   Hooton   42                       "
William Hooton   16                      "
Mary Ann   "        14                      "
Maria         "          8                      "
Emily         "          3                      "
Rebecca     "         1                       "

Living in St Alkmund, Derby

Had  a look on the 1901 and William has now died found a possible death for him in 1900

William Hooton died Sep qtr 1900 Derby district age 66   vol 7b page 343

This is how the family looked then without him

Maria  51   widow  head   Laundress   b.  Derby
Mary a 23              dau                                "
Emily   13               dau                                "
Walter  9                son                                "

Daughter Rebecca also died found her poss birth and death

Rebecca Hooton  born Dec qtr 1889  vol 7b 526
   "              "        died Jun qtr  1892  vol 7b  294

Theres more to follow but just going to get a cup of tea ok.

I'm back again.. I meant to say that Rebecca was 2 when she died

I have searched and searched but cant seem to find them on  the 1881. could be mistranscribed but I have tried every which way with them to find them.

found them on the 1871 though

William Hooton  34   Spinner of silk   b. Derby
maria         "       23   winder  of silk   b. Derby
Edward     "         5                             b. derby

Living 12 Sowter Square, St werburg, Derby...not sure about the Sowter bit though it was a bit hard to read.

Again on the 1861 he was hard to find and I got nowhere with him but on the 1851 I think I may have found him

Lydia Hooton  Head  widow  40  b. Measham
William Hooton  son              18  b. Derby
Henry   Hooton  son              13  b. Derby
Susan  Hooton   dau              4   b. Derby

Gt Back Packer street  St Alkmund, Derby

Now going by the death record I found that fits in nicely age wise with this William so we can just presume he wasn't sure of his age on other census Hee hee..typical man.

found poss birth records for William and Maria's other children

William  born march qtr 1875  vol 7b  497
Emily     born Dec  qtr 1887     vol 7b  497
Couldn't find a birth of Maria but found a poss death
Maria died Sep qtr 1896 age 14
Couldn't find anything for mary ither.

I then tried to find them  in 1841 and found them in Nottingham !!

John Hooton  40   FWK   not born in County
Lydia Hooton 30              "        "   "      "
William   "       3                "       "   "       "
Henry     "       2                "       "   "       "

living on Gregory Street, Radford, Nottingham

Well its the early hours of the morning and I'm  going to call it a night.

It will be interesting to see if the marriage cert confirms the parentage.

And one of Williams children (if you get their birth cert) will confirm Maria's name.

All the best and Merry Christmas

Angela.
