Post too W--I--D--E!
« on: Thursday 14 July 05 12:47 BST (UK) »

I posted a message in the Common Room with a picture that came out much bigger than I expected.  This has resulted in the text covering too wide an area to read comfortably on both that and the replies.  I have now halved the size of the picture, but the text is still unwieldy.  How can I rectify this?

Hi Dimps,

the problem now, is that you  posted an URL which is wider than the screen.  Nothing you can do about it really, ........

unless you use this idea from JAP:

Quote from: JAP
If you don't already know (and as it can get distracting scrolling across posts) there is a wonderful site that will turn a great big long URL into a Tiny URL for you!  It is at:
http://tinyurl.com/
You can then include the tinyURL in your post and it will still lead to the right site but it won't make the thread scroll horizontally.

Moderator Comment:
Even better is to use the similar, RootsChat-based solution - see Reply 14 below

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,111822.msg602906.html#msg602906
or direct: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,134417.0.html

or, using the above URL as an example, instead of just pasting in the url, write
Code:
You can use [url=http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,41541.msg168581.html#msg168581]JAP's idea[/url]

the URL itself won't show in the posting, instead, what you see is this:
You can use JAP's idea

You can also click on "Add BCC tags" above, bottom row, second from the left to get the
Code:
[url][/url]
tags

Hope either of these help,
Bob

Good Morning All,

Could someone please explain why it is necessary for us to scroll from side to side? It is extremely difficult to maintain one's train of thought whilst reading long distances across the screen.

Many thanks, Chris

This generally happens when someone posts an image which is wider than the original table or posts a full url for a web page which is extremely long. The table system that Rootschat uses is a flexible one so the pages widen to accomodate these insertions.

Rootschat is based on a variable table size which moves to accomodate what is posted ..... if you post an image which is wider than the screen this happens for every subsequent post for that thread.

The same happens if you place an extremely long web address into a line although there are ways around this one.

Embarrassed  I'm presuming of course that you are simply referring to Rootschat.

Just a general thought on this subject:

I notice this wide-screen effect quite often but when I point it out to others, they say "Sorry, I hadn't noticed"

This does not mean they don't check their postings -- but it probably does mean they are using a desktop or tower computer with a screen width (resolution) of 1280 or even 1600 pixels.

Many of us use laptops, with a resolution of 1024 pixels, or on older machines, even 800 pixels, so whether images or long URLs, we do notice it !!

This simple idea may help:

Click on the RootsChat PRINT button, found on the top right of the first reply on each page.
It brings up a 'Print Preview' page that contains all the replies wrapping correctly.

The images aren't displayed, though.

"Keeping it in the family"

Instead of the tinyURL tip, how about this, a RootsChat solution:

Topic: Shrinking Very Long Website Links
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,134417.0.html

Trystan has set up a similar system to tinyURL on RootsChat.
See the above topic for more details.
