Epping Crown Court???
« on: Tuesday 07 September 04 23:25 BST (UK) »

 Huh
Dear Knowledgable and delightful people.
Can some one tell me why a branch of my family are in a census living at Crown Court Epping???
Its not there now, and the family are at High St, Epping either side of it. Can't think why, seems odd to me. I await your inspired, errr, inspiration.
Thank you
Barry

Barry,

Have you checked any directories to see if there was a Crown Court in Epping and where it was?  I was thinking it might be near an inn/pub called The Crown, hence its name.  If you tell me where to look, I can check the census CDs for the address - does it come under Essex, Hertfordshire or Middlesex? (different CD for the last one)

Latest news:

presume it is Brewers you are looking for?  Crown Court is on the enumerators walk near the Baptist Chapel in Epping High St.  Go to www.old-maps.co.uk for an old map of Epping to pinpoint that one.
There are four households listed as living at Crown Court in 1881, one of which is the Brewer household.  There are another two Brewer families just around the corner on the High St - one is one page before and the other one on the following page.

So Crown Court would appear to be a courtyard or the equivalent.  Hope that helps.

Hi Nell,
Thank you for looking that up, it makes good sence to me Grin
Yes, it's the Brewers alright!
I've not looked in any directories, where would I find one?
I did have a wander about Epping the other week and there are two churches almost next to each other on the High St,  but I need to have another look as I didnt note which was which.
Nowadays there isnt a pub called the Crown but if I have a better look i might find a clue, maybe name changed. I noticed at the back of one of the churches there are offices and a car park, perhaps where the court used to be. Looked at old maps but the Epping one is unreadable.
Just a thought, as the High St families are on pages either side of the Court, does this mean the court was in between? Just that the modern houses that replaced those there at the time are large semis and if the High St numbers are the same as the ones I have 12, 20 and 22 (20 and 22 now attached), then I cant think where a court would have fitted and its on the opposite side of the road about 400 yards from the nearest church.
Right then, back on my bike to Epping me thinks. Thanks again for the advice Grin Grin Grin

Barry

There are no numbers for the High Street addresses - sorry.  I understand that the enumerators route usually followed one side of a road and if there was a side road/alley, he went down it on one side and came up the other before carrying on on the original road.  So I would say, yes the court was quite close to the Baptist church.  Is there a local studies section in Epping Library?  I would think that someone there may be able to help - or go into the bookshop and browse the "local" section and see if there are any of those old photo books that are quite popular.  A church, especially if gone, usually merits a picture or two.  Or maybe the Frith Photo collection.  Not sure how else to approach it.  Directories can be found online at www.historicaldirectories.org  I tried a quick search but didn't have any luck with Crown Court.
