Researching Anglesey Families
« on: Thursday 08 January 04 20:10 UTC (UK) »

Please list the families you are researching from Anglesey (and from which areas).

Some Anglesey trivia for you:
Note also that Anglesy is also referred to as "Mon" (with a ^ over the 'o' - with the 'o' pronounced in the same as in 'mow') and Ynys Mon ('Ynys' means 'island' in Welsh).

Anglesey is the home of the village with the world's longest station name of:
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogoerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

There is a saying "Mon, Mam Cymru' which means "Anglesey, the mother of Wales".

Some people on the mainland used to refer to the people on Anglesey as "Moch Mon" ('Anglesey Pigs') but the reference came more from the large pig rearing industry that Anglesy once had.

Anglesey is still a vibrant stronghold of the Welsh language, with the majority of the people Welsh speaking. A treat for you to experience this would be during a "Gamamfa Cannu" (a 'singing meeting') or on Christmas Eve for a "Plygain" (Welsh hymns and carols)

The main focus of the island was Llangefni (right in the centre of the island) where markets are held for the sale of not only local produce, but also in livestock trading.
