Following Chris in 1066Land's posting about the gravestone for Tilden Smith, I though I'd post this one.
The stone is in Larbert Churchyard in Stirlingshire and is in amazingly good condition.
The Inscription reads:
"Erected by John and Alexander Muir, lawful sons of Robert Muir and Elizabeth Morrison Indwellers in the Baroney of Quarole in memory of JAMES MUIR their brother Who lost his life (with another of the hands) at Hispaniola in Mounte Christe river (going over the Barr for fresh water) out of the long boat belonging to the Prince Ferdinand. Andrew Anderson Captain & were taken up & interred by him on the 9th of may MDCCLXI. (1761) The deceast JAMES MUIR was born the 25th June MDCCXLII (1742) In the old town of Stenhouse, in this Parish."
It has a beautiful carving of a tall ship on the back of the stone which I'll try and attach (I'm notoriously bad at attaching things, but here goes)
Anne.

Thanks Runner,
It's what I do most weekends (and during the week to if I can get away with it)
I've got thousands more, not quite as interesting as this one though. I like the one's with 'the stories' best.

Wow Anne! That is stunning, and what great detail on the stone, about the unlucky fellow...Scottish stones are good for that sort of thing, even if just to give some genealogy. A lovely stone, his brothers must have loved him very much Thank you for posting it! Prue

Hi Russell,
More like Jaggy Nettle or Itchy Coo . . . . no I think Worzel Gummidge as by the time I emerge from raking about - that's just who I look like.
Unfortunately, to get the whole of this next stone in, I'd need to be about ten feet tall but it makes interesting reading nevertheless . . . .
I MR S 1746
Here lyes the dust of Mr. JAMES SMITH who in his retayerment time of the Rebellion Dyed at Slamanen the 9th of February 1746 in the 33 year of his age After he had labored about 4 years in the work of the Ministrie Among the people to their satisfaction.

The script is so elegant and so crisp after all these years yet other stones have eroded in only half the time. At least we can still remember him ! Russell
I wonder if the monument is Aberdeenshire granite. My Leith born grandmother had that granite especially brought down and erected over her young daughter's Yorkshire grave.
Rena (still looking for the 1818 Glasgow family headstone "Thy Will Be done").

Russell,
Do you have a remedy - I'll try anything?
I suffer terribly from prickly heat, have done for years. I've tried every anti-histamine ever made, factor 99 sun cream, sun-blocks and other less 'recognised' treatments but nothing works except staying out of the sun altogether. You can imagine how hard this is - even after ten minutes hanging out the washing I get lumps and bumps. Long sleeves don'tmake any difference either.
Lindsay, I'll attach the photo you were talking about but I think it might be another one altogether you're thinking of. The second picture attached - is it something like this?
You do realise you're encouraging me . . . . ! (Not that I really need encouraging when it comes to gravestones!)
Anne
