Associate Secession Church Stirling
« on: Saturday 10 December 05 20:48 UTC (UK) »

Could anyone help me with information on Associate Secession Church Stirling.
In particular in relation to any baptism records around the years 1760 - 1780.
I am trying to find the family of my 4X Gt Grandfather Robert Bell.
He was said to be born Stirling or Bathgate.
Thankyou,
Chris.

Hi Chris,

Try this link for information about the various splits in the Scottish church(es).

http://website.lineone.net/~davghalgh/churchhistorytext.html

I would try the Scottish National Archives for the records, if they exist, although I do know that in the 19th century, some children of parents belonging to the various churches were recorded in the parish registers of the Church of Scotland but I couldn't say how common this was.  Some of my husband's ancestors were founding members of the Evangelical Union Church.

Hi Chris,

Could only find one birth for Bell in Stirling:

David BELL,
Date of Birth: 3 Sep 1775
Date of Christening: 5 Sep 1775
Recorded in: Stirling, Stirlingshire, Scotland
Collection: St John Street; Associate Session Congregation
Father:   John BELL
Mother:   Janet WILLSON

He seems to be the only child listed to this couple.

In Bathgate:

Robert BELL,
Date of Birth: 11 Feb 1788
Date of Christening: 9 Mar 1788
Recorded in: Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland
Father:   Robert BELL
Mother:   Jean WARDROBE

Robert was one of six children born to this couple. The others were: Jean in 1775, Helen in 1778, Martha in 1783, Janet in 1785 and John in 1790.

(The above info is from the British Vital Records)

Thank you Anne,
I have just realized that i did not post a date of birth for Robert.
From the information i have on his death cert, he would have been born c1774.
Regards,
Chris.

Hi again Chris,

There were (according to the BVR's) a total of 25 Robert Bells born in Scotland 1774 +/- 5 years!

Chris,

Do you have Robert's parents' names from his death certificate?

You might wish to look at the catalogue of the Stirling Archives.  They have extensive holdings of church records - but be aware that there might be huge gaps in the years stated (registers for certain years not having survived or not having been located).  The Stirling Archives site is at:

http://www.stirling.gov.uk/index/access-info/archives.htm

Click on Catalogue and then click on Church Records.

Will keep looking,
