Hello Janice M,

I've only just joined 'rootschat' and have noticed your posting.

Alexander Leitch and Mary Weir are my 4x great grandparents and it's through their son James and his wife Catherine Black that I hail from.  Perhaps we can exchange some information.

Regards, cemetery records, recently I've been told that there is a transcription of the MI's in Kilmodan church (Glendaruel) which are held at the Argyll and Bute Archives. Who have since directed me to the Scottish Genealogist Society in Edinburgh who hold a copy - I've recently emailed them asking for a copy and am still waiting.

Please get in touch if any of this is of interest.

Regards,

Solong.

Hi

So good to hear from relatives. Smiley

James Leitch and Catherine Black are my gggg-grandparents. Their son Andrew married Wilhelmina Chambers/Chalmers. They had at least 6 children:
Andrew - April 1, 1859
James - March 15, 1862
Jane - April 7, 1864
John - October 23, 1866
Catherine - December 5, 1870
Agnes - April 23, 1874

Catherine, married David Baskerville in 1891 and had at least 3 children.
David  - 1891
James - 1893
Catherine - 1898

James married Mary Bulloch and had 5 children.
My father James Leitch Baskerville was their 3rd child.

My parents moved to Canada from Glasgow, Scotland, in 1952.

I would appreciate any information you can add to this line. Also curious to know which child of James Leitch and Catherine Black you come from. I have information on a few, but not all.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Janice

Hello Janice,

Thank you for your quick reply. This is all very exciting!!

James Leitch and Catherine Black are my 3x great grandparents (according to my family history software).

Their daughter Anne born 1839 married Peter Mitchell in Kilmodan 1863.  I have found so far seven children - though some died in infancy.

Their daughter Isabella McLea Mitchell born 1870 married Robert Mclaws in Glasgow 1895.  They had two children Peter and Elizabeth.  Elizabeth married David Robertson who were my grandparents.  Sadly Elizabeth died in her forties.  However, they had three sons to which the eldest John, was my father.  Sadly, all three sons have died.  I'm an only child and I'm married to Ashley.  We have no children but have one cat!  My father's brothers Peter never married, but the youngest son Robert married and had two sons David and Christopher who are both younger than myself.  I was born in 1958.

Like you, I have managed to find bits and pieces of the others and would be happy to exchange.  Actually, I did find a marriage between an Andrew and Wilhelmina Chambers/Chalmers for 1859 Glasgow but as I hadn't come across a death cert for Andrew to confirm his parents, I wasn't sure.

I've recently come across some very interesting yet upsetting information about a Janet Leitch a possible sister to James Leitch (Catherine BLACK). Basically, a Janet Leitch married a Duncan Mackellar in Kilmodan in 1819.  They have a least 4 children.  I've never been able to find either of their death certificates to confirm parents etc. And I have never traced them through the census.  However, I was contacted by Alasdair Broun  who was interested in tracing the Mackeller's.  He adviced that a Duncan MacKellar and a Janet Leitch were married and together with his Uncle, another Duncan MacKellar went to Australia in the 1820s.  There, whilst nephew Duncan was  'up country' Janet was murdered in 1828.  It's all very intriguing, but trying to establish if she is Janet born to Alexander and Mary Leitch is proving difficult.  This is the reason why I have been trying to obtain copies of the MI's from Kilmodan just in case they mention her on a tombstone.  I've been informed there was no death cert  but there is a newspaper report but alas doesn't mention family details.

I shall send over the details.  However, if you prefer me to send them via an email address let me know.

I really should introduce myself!!

Elaine Trafford nee Robertson and we live near Winchester, UK.

Bye for now, regards,

Elaine.

Janice,
Here's some more info on the family, making the world smaller still:

Agnes Chalmers Leitch, dau of Andrew and Wilhelmina, married 21 Apr 1899 in Govan,  John Cairns. He was her second marriage, first was to a man named Cree.

John was the son of William Kirkwood Cairns & Helen Thomson.

John & Agnes had a daughter, Agnes Chalmers Leitch Cairns, who married 30 Dec 1921 in Govan, Peter Reid Lawson.

Peter and Agnes had a daughter Elizabeth Reid Lawson, b 1923.

Peter was the son of John Christie Lawson and Elizabeth Reid.
Elizabeth Reid was the sister of my paternal gt-grandmother Mary Wilson Reid, who married George Campbell Ross.
My grandmother Elizabeth Reid Ross, was their dau, born in Govan.

The Ross' emigrated to NY in 1904.
John & Elizabeth Lawson emigrated to NY in 1921.
Peter Lawson and Agnes emigrated to NY after his parents.

The Ross' and Lawsons built a house together here in NY, and although I knew the Ross', I only knew Susan Lawson (see below), not any of the others, even though they had attended my father's sister's wedding, and stayed in touch with those cousins until my aunt's death in the 70's.

Peter and Agnes' dau Elizabeth Reid Lawson never married, and may have passed away by now.

Peter had a sister Susan Todd Lawson, who also emigrated, and married Victor Blanco, born in Spain. They had no children. Upon retirement, they lived in the house both families had built,; Susan, widowed, moved to Toronto to someone in the Lawson family when the house had to be sold.

I do not know which Lawsons were in Toronto, do not know what happened to any of them except Susan. Peter had died by 1930, apparantly Agnes never remarried as of 1950.

Cheers,
Peigi

Hi Peigi

Thank you for all of the information.

What a small world! (Toronto is where I was born)

It is absolutely amazing, just how many family members I have managed to locate, or who have located me, because of this site.  Smiley

If there is any information I can offer that you need, let me know. I have managed to find information on some spouses and children of the Leitch family.

I have enough info on the Leitch line.

If any of whom you're researching ended up in Ulster or Greene Co, NY area, let me know. I'll help if I can.
Thanks,

Alexander Leitch who married Mary Weir are my ancestors. Their daughter Mary married John Munn and moved to Greenock. Their daughter Mary Munn married Dugald McLarty in Greenock. Their son Archibald McLarty married Margaret Cameron. Their son James Cameron McLarty married Janet Ferguson Dennis. These were my Grandparents.  Their daughter Margaret Cameron Dennis McLarty is still living. I am her eldest daughter and live in Arkansas in the US. I hope you can follow this, it is the first time I have been on this site.
