I am trying to trace this man who is father of Harriett Abrams. I have been unable to find him any where in the census of 1841. There is some family talk of him being Polish and a jewish refugee but I do not know if this is a polish name. His daughter was living in Hackney in 1841 with a family called Workman, she was a teached at the English School. she married Thomas English in 1849.
I would be grateful for any ideas. many thanks

Hi,
Any clues about him from Harriett's marriage certificate? Does it give an occupation for him?
I would guess the surname had been altered if he was originally Polish.

Hi,
I don't know if any of these are your fellow, but I have tried to look at variants of Abrams from Poland, and have found these naturalisations:-
Naturalisation Papers: Abrahams, Barnett, from Poland (Russia). Certificate 2723 issued 21 August 1858;
Naturalisation Papers: Abraham, Israel, from Prussian Poland. Certificate 4938 issued 24 January 1866;
Naturalisation Papers: Abrahams, Isaiah, from Russian Poland. Certificate 5486 issued 25 May 1867;
Nationality and Naturalisation: Abrahams, Isydor, from Poland. Resident in London. Certificate 4,484 issued 28 August 1919.
Thanks,
Darin.

Where and when was Harriett born? (I see her as 25 on 1841, do you have her in later censuses?). Are her and Thomas the ones in 1861 and 1871 who have moved to Yorkshire?
If so, she was b. possibly about 1822/3, in Tottenham. As well as the occupation from the marriage certificate, knowing where the marriage took place (which church?) and who the witnesses were would help. It's possible James had died by 1841, even if he wasn't listed as deceased on the certificate.

Hi thanks for your intrest. Harriett and Thomas were married in the Abney Chapel , Church Strreet , Stoke Newington on27th Dec 1849. Harriett is shown as born 1812, -14 on census 1851 and 61. Yes they did go to Leeds between 1851 and 61 Her father is shown as a spiritualist and not recorded as deceased but he was not a witness.The wisneses were Thomas' sister Harriett and a Mark Arthur Berry. She was shown as residing at High Street Stoke Newington , but do not know if this is same address as on 1841 census. Bethan

Spiritualist! That's an interesting one.
Abney Chapel, aka Abney Congregational Church was a nonconformist chapel in Stoke Newington, it is probably worth looking into the history of it and if any other Abrams attended the same chapel. Hackney Archives is probably the best place to look. I wonder if Mark 'Arthur' Berry could be the Mark Usher Berry who married in Newington in 1845?
Harriet was at "Nursery Place" in 1841, looks like.
I do notice a John Abrams b. around 1802 in Tottenham in 1841 and 1861 censuses. Wonder if there's a link?

Yes it surprised me too. I have looked at the chapel history , will have to did a bit more. Could certainly be Mark Usher Berry as writing not too clear. Will look into to the John Abrams you suggest. Many thanks.
