Hi Sharyn,

I checked the Thundridge PRs for Martha's christening on 21 February 1831 and her father, James, is recorded as a labourer living at Haven End, Standon.    I searched the 1841 for Standon but there is no trace of the family in that area.

Thanks Peter,

I wonder where the family went to . . . surely they didn't all die young!  I was trying to trace this family because I believe James could be the brother of my ancestor Joseph Bradford and his wife, Susan. The reason for this is that I've been told, and I think it was actually by you, Peter, that both families had some of their children baptised on two separate occasions in Thundridge.

Joseph and Susan Bradford's children were:
Benjamin Bradford bap: 31 Oct 1824, Thundridge
Stephen Bradford bap 7 Oct 1827, Thundridge (my ancestor)
For one of these events Joseph is recorded as a shepherd in Bengeo.

Of the two families, I can only find Stephen on the 1841 and 1851 census. He was an apprentice carpenter in Saffron Walden, Essex, in 1841, and by 1851 had married (in Saffron Walden) and moved to the London area. Unfortunately he died in 1858.

In trying to go back further with Joseph and Susan Bradford I found a marriage for a Joseph Bradford and Susan Overill 31 Dec 1823 in Saffron Walden (on the IGI).  The date ties in with the baptism of Benjamin, but I can't be 100% sure they are the right people.

Where did all these people disappear too???  This is my brick wall.

Thanks so much for trying to help.

Sharyn

Hello again, Peter,

I think I may have just found one family on the 1851 census after yet another hunt.  In Broxbourne, Hertfordshire:

James Bradford head, 40, shepherd, b: Standen, Herts
Eliza Bradford wife, 37, b: Standen
Stephen, son, 9, b: Standon
James, son, 4, b: Standon
Martha, dau, 2, b: Broxbourne
Charles, son, 7months, b: Broxbourne
Martha Morna/Moma(?), visitor, 15, b: Manuden, Essex

The ages of the children are different, but perhaps they used the same name when a younger sibling of the new child had died earlier.

On reflection, the parents were a bit young to start having children in 1818 when Mary was born, so I guess it's back to the drawing board.  There may be a family connection given the names are so similar . . . or am I now clutching at straws?

What do you think?

Hi Sharyn,

Seems like a good discovery.

I have found the 1851 family entry under ref 107/1705  F.42. P36. but read the original images slightly differently.   James occupation is clearly shewn as 'shepheard' and birthplace Standon whilst Eliza, Stephen and James were born at Stanstead.

This opens up several lines of enquiry and if I find anything I will let you know.
