Help with the Royal Artillery please
« on: Monday 12 December 05 23:22 UTC (UK) »

I'm tracing my gt-grandfather James Gallett' army record. He was born abt. 1839 at Hanley Castle, Worcestershire.

He's on the 1861 census as a soldier at Horfield Barracks, Bristol, together with his cousin John b. abt 1840. James was back home in 1871 as a Chelsea Pensioner, but this is the first & only lead I've found to John.

I'd like help working out which regiment they were with, which will hopefully lead to more on where he served etc. This census page states 2/12th regiment, & others state Royal Artillery, but I find the whole regimental numbering business completely incomprehensible and could do with any help on this

thanks

Hi Llwyd

Thanks for your reply; I'd already spent a couple of hours looking at this site and whilst it helped me with general information, I wasn't able to work out what 2/12th regiment was in 1861 - I'm not even entirely clear what 2/12th means. Various bits I found elsewhere about the history of Horfield Barracks haven't been specific enough to suggest which regiments were there at this time, either, but I'm sure there's an answer out there somewhere!

thanks again

Hi Nick,

2/12th refers to the 2nd battalion of the 12th regiment of foot (The Suffolk regiment)

There is some info on the Suffolks here;

Hope this helps,Mick Wink
