Please can someone lookup the 1851C?
« on: Wednesday 14 December 05 06:31 UTC (UK) »

Hi Everyone,
I have a curious puzzle, and was wondering if anyone was able to lookup the 1851c for Cromarty.
I have already viewed this census, (years ago),but, after buying the 1861c i see a contradiction, and am wondering if I have transcribed incorrectly.

What i am looking for is this...............

1851 C
7 Church Street.
Cromarty.

Murdo McCaskill head Mar, 70 yrs, Chelsea Pensioner, born Assynt Sutherland.

Catherine McCaskill wife, 50yrs, Doenosh, Sutherland

John and Isabella in the house as well.

in the 1861 Census,
7 Church Street,
Cromarty.

Catherine McCaskill, born Bantry Ireland.

Regards
Joanne.

you probably have this by now, but anyway....

the following is taken from the 1851 census index for "the black isle". (which includes amongst others: cromarty, avoch & fortrose).

there were only 4 McCaskill's living on the black isle at the time.

surname/name/age/county/where born/vol.no/enum dist/page
McCaskill/Catherine/50/SUT/Dornoch/61/B2/1
McCaskill/Isabella/17/ABD/Longside/61/B2/2
McCaskill/John/26/ROC/Tain/61/B2/2
McCaskill/Murdo/70/SUT/Assynt/61/B2/1

and according to my index...

vol 61 is: "Cromarty"

enumeration district B2 is: "(20 pages) That part of the parish of Rosemarkie within the boundaries of the Royal United Burghs of Fortrose and Rosemarkie bounded on the north by the High Street of Fortrose, on the west by the Smithy Holm Burn, on the east by the Water Furrows and on the south by the Dalry Road, all within the Royalty."

hope this helps a little, and my apologies if you already have this info.

kind regards,
Lorna.

How are you going Lorna? Cheesy Cheesy

Thanks for this so it was Dornoch,(I couldn't quite work that out years ago)  I wonder what Catherine was up to?

Was she from Dornoch or Bantry Ireland?

Thanks for your efforts here......lovely to hear from you......
Lovely Lady....
