You didn't give an exact date for the marriage but it might be of interest that St Pauls wasn't consecrated until 25 July 1864.

1861 james is in aberdare with wife sarah(born Staffordshire) and 4 sons
1871 james is in aberdare -married but no wife with him and 7 sons with him -it doesn't look like he left his sons in Aberdare when he married 2nd sarah
his sons are James age 8 in 61, 19 in 1871 John 6 in 61, 17 in 71 b Somerset Joseph 6 in 61, 15 in 71 b Aberdare Walter 2 in 61 13 in 71 b Aerdare Abraham 10 in 71 b Aberdare Isaac 6 in 71 b Aberdare jacob 4 in 71 b Aberdare
is this the family??
He doesn't seem to have left any of his sons in aberdare?
if you have the birth certs for all of the sons then it will tell you mothers maiden name?

So many sad accidents in the collieries.
So the first sSarah he married was b c. 1830 in Staffordshire ( according to 1861 census) -what was her maiden name? it should be on the birth cert of one of the children.
On the marriage cet to the 2nd sarah (scrivener) was she a spinster -and who were the witnesses ? they may give a clue as to sarah's family

I'm not sure this helps really but in 1861 Ann Biggs was in Down Street Wokingham, aged 35, housekeeper to John Gillgrass (55), labourer born Wokingham, and his daughter Hope aged 15. John was a widower. They had a couple of lodgers too. RG9/750/15/20
I wonder if Sarah was illegitimate? I can't find any likely candidates in 1841/51/61 with a father Richard, but there are a few Sarah Scriveners around in various places, servants with no identifiable family.
Who was the other witness to the marriage?
Anne

But what was the name of the witness who "made their mark"?
(this wasn't uncommon at that time -many had never been taught to read and write -and sometimes even if a bride could write , if he husband made his mark, then she would too)
