Did a quick search for you - only 2 Richard Burns listed on OPR between 1830 and 1840 - one in Dundee in 1837 - another more likely in Prestonkirk Parish 16/3/1834 - parents Richard Burns and Elizabeth Lowe (Prestonkirk was the parish where East Linton in East Lothian is now).

More potential good news - Elizabeth Johnstone - OPR Birth / Baptism entry at Peebles 16/9/1837 - parents Robert Johnstone & Elizabeth Hunter.

Richard Burns / Elizabeth Johnstone marriage at Traquair 19/9/1852.

Thanks for that according to Richard's death cert his father was John Burns but i guess the info is only as good as the people giving it.The Elizabeth johnstone unfortunately is not my one the marriage is the right one harriet Cheesy
