Searching for the ancestry of Thomas Gibson who was born circa 1776 in Clackmannanshire and was living there at Broad Street in Alloa during the 1841 census [died before 1851].
He married (15 December 1804, Alloa) Hannah Stewart (born 5 March 1784, Alloa; died 8 January 1861, Alloa) by whom he had eight children [all of whom were born in Alloa]:
William, born 18 October 1805; Isabel, born 28 September 1807*; John, born 28 August 1809; James, born 13 October 1811; Helen, born 11 March 1814; Jane, born 5 August 1816; Alexander, born 27 October 1818; Catherine, born 12 December 1820 [living with her parents during 1841 census].
*Isabel married Alexander Kilgour (born circa 1797), they were my thrice-great-grandparents.

A little speculative thought! If Thomas and Hannah followed traditional Scottish naming patterns, his first born son was called William after his father. There is an IGI entry for a Thomas Gibson born 22 Feb 1772 in Carnock, Fife (about 8-10 miles East of Alloa). This is an actual extract from OPRs. Father is shown as William and mother as Helen Gentleman. Helen, I noticed, was also the name of Thomas and Hannah's second daughter.
How to connect with centainty to your Thomas is difficult given he died before 1855 official registration era. Hopefully the arrival of the 1841/1851 census data on-line on Scotlands People will help! See link: http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?r=554&413

Monica:
Thank you for your suggestions.
Thomas and Hannah certainly followed the traditional Scottish naming custom anent the given names of both their eldest daughter (named for Hannah's mother) and their second son (named for Hannah's father).
Thomas's death before 1851 rules out that census, but I shall try to locate him in the one for 1841.
Thanks again,
Terrance
P.S.
Since I first posted this I have been informed that Thomas does appear in the 1841 census -- "Living at Broad Street, Alloa in 1841: Thomas Gibson aged 65, Carter, born in Clackmannanshire, Hannah Gibson aged 55, born in Clackmannanshire, Catherine Gibson aged 20, born in Clackmannanshire."
If his brthdate and birthplace given in the above census record is correct that would seem to rule out the Thomas born in 1772 at Carnock in Fife.
