Has he changed his name?

Thomas James Smith - Abt. 3 Aug 1888, Newtwonbutler, County Fermanagh.  Had mail sent to him in name of McCabe while in New Zealand.  Does anyone have any idea's??  Because we can't trace him.  Emmigrated to the States as youth and became Union man.  Left in a hurry and came to NZ.
