Hi William,
Do you mean that you think that Isabella, James and Agnes were the children of James and Agnes?
If so, do you think they had more children prior to Isabella (born 1853/58) or Agnes (born 1855)? It's unusual for a first child to be born more than a couple of years after the coupl'e marriage.
Anne

I am afraid I don't have access to the 1841 or 1851 but here are the details for the 1861 census I think this is your family:
Address is 4 Church Street, Dunbarton.
James Robertson, aged 43 Operative mason born in perthshire
Agnes Robertson aged 38 wife, born in Dunbarton
Mary Robertson aged 17 daughter born in Dunbarton a domestic servant
Christina Robertson age 15 born in Dunbarton, a domestic servant
Isabella Robertson aged 9 born in Dunbarton, a scholar
Duncan Robertson aged 4 born in Dunbarton
Janet Munrow aged 2 a Relative born in dunbarton
Best wishes Mo

Hi Mo,
Thanks, this looks a strong possibility. I will check this out. I have Agnes Robertson born 1818 but that could be wrong. Her maiden name was Munro(e) and her mother's name was Janet which would explain the relative aged 2.
The date for Isabella would tie in with the marriage record and the older sisters would explain the time gap from her parents marriage in 1840.
Many thanks,
William

Hello: This will not help your family search in any way directly, but since it is about older censuses I thought I would throw in my two cents. I have found two entries ( 1861, 1851) where the wife was recorded with her maiden name, and the children with the father's last name. This actually helped me a lot.
I also have many entries where the ages, and surnames are different every single time. I notice women tend to age very slowly between censuses. I try to remember that many people did not know how to read or write and therefor didn't know if their demographics were being recorded accurately. I also found that some of my ancestord had children that died so it was many years before a living child. Then there was a bunch , and then another gap. This may be the case with your group. Sorry for butting in , but it was an interesting thread dealing with these anomalies. Donna
