1861 and 1871 Census - Henry Townsend, Devon
« on: Friday 10 September 04 00:28 BST (UK) »

Looking for Henry and Eliza Townsend in both these census.  They were at Witheridge at the time of the 1851 census, so this might be a good place to start.  (Although looking at the birth places of the children in 1851 census, it looks like they had already discovered travel!......(sigh!)....so much easier when they lived, married and died all in the same village!

Sorry Aussie Possum Just realised this isnt even the right John either as your John was the first birth in Somersert after they had left Culmstock. Sorry  About that .... a large family born in diff places...lol...

After all this having to get details from 51 first and sadly I still Cannot find a single one of them in 1871 .......tried every trick I can think of and can't find a solitary one of them and I don't think anybody has the 61 for Devon.
Pity bout that I tried!

Oops, I really didn't give everyone much info, did I?  I'm still recovering from flu and not functioning 100 percent.  Henry was born about 1799 in Culmstock, and Eliza about 1806 in Culmstock.  They had ten children at home in the 1851 census, so hopefully for their sakes by 1861 they had started to thin them out a bit.  There is also a chance they could have been back in Somerset.  Henry is still alive in 1881 living with a son in Somerset, so I am really trying to get a handle on this branch of the family's movements.

Just doing a bit of housekeeping on the Devon Board. Are you still looking for this or have you since found the information? Just confirming if some of these older requests are still required. Kris  Cheesy

I had found the main part of the family on the Somerset census, thanks, but I don't know why Henry's wife is missing in 1861 or where she is.  I did not know about Eliza at St Mary Magdalen and she is definitely one of the family.  I don't know who the married Townsend is at  Combe Florey.  Did it give the details of who the husband was?

Well done, Tara!  I had always thought that would be likely that Eliza would be with one of the children, but I wondered how many census films I would have to plough through to find out.

What is strange is that they had 2 Eliza's for daughters.....the one born 1843 in Witheridge, and the one in 1850 in Witheridge.  The younger one is "Lucy" on a later census.  They must have liked the name!
Thanks once again

Do you happen to have access to who the Eliza at St Mary Magdalen is with as an apprentice?
