No problem Di, I know the main cemetery that you mean but as you say, its more likely they will be somewhere more central to the town. I am not sure when I will be going but will try this week. I will take mother with me and blame her if we get caught tresspassing.. Linda.

Right then folks, I have all the information you have given me, an A4 pad, and the weather is promising to be a balmy 8 degrees. What more do you need for a bit of grave hunting. I will look for specifics this time but perhaps in the summer I will try and document the rest for anyone that is interested. I get the feeling there are not that many unfortunately. Will get back to you on wednesday. Best wishes Linda.

Hi Keith and Anna, I have replied at great length to you and for some reason my posts are not all getting through today. Would you mind very much looking at the thread `The Medcalf Family of Ware` on this board because I posted a separate reply to Di explaining how my trip to the chapel went. Best wishes Linda.

Hi All,
Sorry to return to an old topic but have just received a photo of the Indep Chapel in Dead Lane with the following info-
Independent Chapel. It was built in 1778 in what was known as Dead Lane now Church Street. The chapel was eventually closed in1918 when the organ was presented to the Methodist church in New Road. The Chapel building still stands, and was used as an auction room for some years. It is still used but don't know who owns it or what it is used for.
If someone in Ware can identify that actual building and the location we may yet find the old burial ground.
Here's hoping Di

Hi Diana. Its me again. I visited this chapel when I was doing the rounds in Ware a couple of weeks ago. It caught my eye as we were walking down Church Street as it looked like it was once a chapel but obviously wasnt anymore. I went right up to the front door to see if we could get in but it is now used as offices for a design company. I tried to have a look round the back but couldnt get round. Obviously I had the same idea in mind as you in that there could have been a burial ground at the back. Unfortunately I couldnt gain access. Bye for now. Linda.

Hi Linda,
Oh I am pleased that you thought it looked like it may have once been a church - MAYBE I have finally received the correct photo of the Ind Chapel - at last.
What was either side of the building? or is it possible to see what is behind it from another street at the back?
I wish I knew where the "front garden with the headstones" was situated - it would make it a lot easier.
Sorry to be so persistant about this - I just wish I could be there to actually see the place.
Many thanks for all your help Regards Di

Hi Di, Do I feel another trip to Ware coming on? Church Street is very built up and there are buildings on either side of the chapel. There are certainly no graves in the yard in front of the chapel thats why I tried to get a look round the back. I would have had a better look if I thought it was that one you were interested in as well, but honestly there are so many chapels or ex chapels its hard to sort them all out. I talked the the librarian in Ware library about it and she told me it was used as an auction house. I will look on the map and try to work out what is behind it. I know your family members talked about the front garden with headstones but I still havnt worked out where they were. Can they be more precise? Shine a light into their eyes, anything. The only garden with headstones I have seen is the one at Leaside but that is through a gate to a garden at the rear of the chapel. There is also a quaker burial ground but I havnt been there yet. Let me know if I can help any further. Best wishes Linda.

Is there a possibility with its old name being "Dead Lane" that the gravestones were once on either side of the road?
