1841 Census - Charles Barnacle
« on: Wednesday 21 December 05 22:06 GMT (UK) »

I am trying, unsuccesfully so far, to locate where Charles Barnacle and his wife Mary Ann Barnacle were living in 1841.

I have found them on the 1851 Census at the Pinwall Red Lion, Sheepy Magna, near Atherstone, Warwickshire, where Charles was described as a 'Farmer / Innkeeper', but I understand that they had not arrived at that address in the early 1840s.

Charles Barnacle was born in 1792 at Monks Kirby, Warwickshire, whilst his wife Mary Ann (maiden name not yet discovered) was born about 1790 in Birmingham.

However, the only one of their children that I know about - Mary Barnacle - was baptised at Fenny Drayton, Leicestershire, in February 1816.  It appears to me that the Barnacles probably moved from their home county of Warwickshire into Leicestershire prior to 1816 before moving back there some time in the late 1840s.

Can anyone help me, please, with a look-up in the 1841 Census - but I realise that this might not be easy as the only possible location which I have is that of Fenny Drayton (I have posted a similar request on the Warwickshire site, although I do believe that the Barnacles were, in all probability, in Leicestershire at this time)?

Is there an indexed version of the 1841 Census for Leicestershire anywhere?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thank you 'suffolk suepip' and 'Mike from Leicester' for you speedy and most helpful replies - very much appreciated.

The 1841 Census information, which definitely relates to my ancestors, was illuminating in that it identified the existence of a Barnacle child that I was unaware of and, more interestingly to me being a Fox, the existence of a Fox child Olivia of whom I was also unaware.  I have now managed to follow that Fox child to her eary death in 1848 aged 10 years.

The information about the wedding of Charles and Mary Ann(e) Barnacle was excellent too in that it provided me with Mary Ann(e)'s maiden name after years of searching for it.

Thanks again to both of you.

If you would like I'll have a look at a copy of the original entry for Charles & Mary Anne's Marriage, next time I'm at the Records Office Wigston.
It might give more information useful to you....( Re witnesses )

Hi Mike,

Thanks so much.  Your assistance has been great.  Both for the original information and for the rider today (and, of course, for the research at Wigston).

I now have another branch of the family to research - the Farmers - but this might prove difficult.   Mary Ann Barnacle (nee Farmer) stated in each of four (or is it five?) censuses that she was born in Birmingham, but it appears that the family was established in the Fenny Drayton area by the 1810s.

Maybe the whole Farmer family moved to Leicestershire from Birmingham for some reason or, perhaps, Mary Ann was born at a relative's home in Birmingham but her parents were actually resident at Fenny Drayton at that time.

You mentioned in a previous posting that you were using a CD-Rom of Leicestershire marriages when you found the Barnacle / Farmer nuptials.

Is there a similar one for Leicestershire (Fenny Drayton and surrounding areas) baptisms available to the public as I would like to look into the Farmers some more and also try to find out what children Charles and Mary Ann Barnacle had (other than my direct ancestor Mary Barnacle born in 1816)?

Again, many thanks.

Best wishes,
Richard
