Hi asaph,
as Walter is a soldier in 1881 this looks like him in 1871.
1871 Census Portland Dorset
Verne Citadel Barracks
Walter Jay, NC Officer, 21, Corporal Army Dalston Middlesex
RG10 Folio: 26 Page: 11
I'll see if I can find him on the earlier censuses.
Regards Darcy

Hi again,
I can't find a Lydia & Edward together with a son Walter. Here is a possibility. I have checked this family in 1851 and they have a son called Edward. I will post the 1851 too and you can check up and see if you can confirm any of it. Unfortunately both censuses are difficult to read - either very faint or crossed out! - also some of this family keep changing their place of birth.
1861 Census Shoreditch
3 Stonebridge Terrace
William Jay, head, Officer of Inland ....? Town Hall, Waltham Cross Herts Lydia, wife, 50, Woodbridge Suffolk William, son, 15, Collector of Tithes?, Bermondsey Isobel, dau, 17, Bermondsey Walter, son, 11, Scholar, Haggerstone Middlesex

Hi Darcy The 1861 census with william and lydia the youngest child listed as HALTES? change the H to W and the S to R and you have Walter which would seem more correct, have never seen haltes as a name.

My goodness you are right!. It is recorded and transcribed as Haltes and Walter never dawned on me. That is a real possibility as I can't find Walter staying with anyone else in 1851. You can go to the top of the class.
I have checked the Edward & Lydia family back to 1851 but they don't appear to have a son Walter and they seem to have lived in the same place all their lives. They have a son Edward and a daughter Rebecca as well as Mary Ann.Here they are for your reference. I'm going to check Haltes again!

I've had another look and you are right.
It's really tiny, scrawly writing and there is a stroke across the "W" which makes it look like an "H" - but I'm positive now it says Walter! How dumb am I ?
Well, I don't know if I have helped you - or confused you but that's the best match for Walter I can find in Middlesex.
Maybe you can do a bit of checking and see if you can make a connection.
Regards Darcy
