have a wedding certificate for BETSY THORPE to a Joseph lambert 1st September 1845 residence is Luton Division(not sure where this is) marriage took place at the parish church in the parish of wymondham Norfolk. Her father was Samuel Thorpe a Butcher
I know lots about Joseph and the family from this time on but cannot find anything on Betsy or her family on certificate it has both thorpe and thorp and even what looks like thorpa.
On the census returns Betsey is down as being born c1820 in Swaversey cambridge
what I would like is to find her birth details and if possible her father Samuels and who her mother is please

Hi Sandie
Check out the Cambs Family History Society's excellent site on
http://www.cfhs.org.uk/Search.html
Running a search against Thorp, parish Swavesey throws up 54 names of which Elizabeth born 1818 dau of Samuel and Jemima looks favourite. The only other candidate is Betsey Thorpe baptised 1827 but she died in 1834. The burial index also shows Jemima being buried in 1823 age 39.
The 1841 census index has three Samuels living in Swavesey aged 39, 60 and 75. I've checked the original census and the 39 year old Samuel's occupation is farmer (but he’s too young) ; the 75 year old was a farmer as well, but the 60 year old was a butcher. He appeared to be living in the household of Robert Crisp 55 cordwainer and Ann Crisp 45 – could she have been a daughter or was he merely a lodger ?
In 1851 the index shows a Samuel Thorp aged 70, and the census itself shows :
High St Swavesey Samuel Thorp lodger widower 70 pauper butcher born Swavesey in the household of Richard (75 ag lab) & Margaret (69) Johnson
So on balance I would say that Elizabeth born 1818, dau of Samuel (born c 1781 Swavesey) and Jemima (c 1784 – 1823) is probably the one you are looking for – but you would need to check the parish register to be sure.
By the way, the IGI (controlled extract) shows a marriage on 15 Jul 1800 at Swavesey between Samuel Thorp and Jemima Bath.
Good hunting
David

thank you david, had a look at the site its certainly worth looking at. The Elizabeth looks like a candidate although she called herself Betsy always. Have just come accross a memorial card for her says she died on 4th May 1886 age 67 so 1818 looks good.
it definately says Samuel is a Butcher so the Samuel that was 60 in the 1841 might be right.
well you have given me lots to mull over thank you sandie

Sandie, the Elizabeth/Betsy interchangeability happened to me, but the other way round. My gg grandmother was christened as Betsy but on her marriage certificate was Elizabeth

yes your right names did seem to be whatever they called themselves rather than what their given names were. It all seems to fit, but as you say must check parish records. Mind you now I am wondering why they went to Norfolk to marry? If samuel was still living in Swavesey and Joseph came from Hertfordshire, they were married by banns so they must have been in Norfolk for a while, oh dear my poor head it buzzes with questions. still thanks to you I might have some answers sandie

Was Betsy on the 1841 census in Wymondham (sorry, I haven't got any Norfolk material at all)?
Possibly she was a servant, but it's a bit of a hike from Swavesey to Wymondham.

havent thought of that will post a lookup request on the norfolk site. They certainly didnt stay there cos all children were born in London. Joseph was down as a Railway clerk on marriage certificate, but he changed his proffession to a Licensed Victular man after my own heart! sandie
