Missing Birth Record
« on: Saturday 24 December 05 01:24 UTC (UK) »

Is there som reason why I can't find a Birth Record. I am looking for Betsy Gunn, Bessie, Elizabeth, Bessy.
She  was Gunn before and after marriage.
Died 1892 in Durness age 64??
Father Donald Gunn, Mother Barbara Morrison (Married 1820)
Also a record for Dond. Gunn and Barbara Morrison 1819 both in Eddrachillis
Children I can find are:
Benjamin               1820
William                   1822
Ann                        1824
Catherine               1827
John                       1829
Benjamin & William are recorded twice in the OPR with same dates but different parents. One record shows Barbara & Donald the other Barbara & Dond.

Betsy & John Gunn were married 1851
I thought the birth of Benjamin in 1820 might have somthing to do with the 2 marriage dates but the 1820 marriage was February and the birth was November, so that would work out O.K. to keep the Free Church happy.
Can't imagine what death & destruction would be visited on you to have a child out of wedlock.

Any help appreciated

Wini

You have found them with the same parents!   Dond was a recorders shorthand for Donald.  I came across it umpteen times this summer in Caithness looking for my ancestors.

I never did find Dond or Donald Oman but had to give up from lack of time. A week is not enough. The Wick archives are extremely helpful !

Are Benjamin & Williams' records direct extracts with a batch number ( I assume you are trying IGI first as a good Scot would - its free !) Most of my relatives were only film numbers which was why we headed north to see the actual (well films of actual ) records and found that whoever transcribed them had made several mistakes.

We also picked up several other clues from the names of witnesses.

Caithness have a very active Family History Society who have good links with the Gunn History centre in Latheron. Its worth a try

Happy hunting    Smiley

Back again Wini

I meant to add that although you are on the other side of the world I gather that you have very good resources down there and could look at the same films we looked at (LDS)

Google for the Caithness site.
Born out of WEDLOCK!!!   Cry
The church was usually happy if the couple were betrothed. If Dad was eager to put his name on the record of birth then the parish would not have to support a young woman who was not capable of earning!  It was pragmatism that drove that rule not religion I fear!

Thanks again Russell.
The next time I get to Townsville I will make a point of going into LDS

Will try Google.

Merry Christmas to you and yours

Hi Wini,

Had a look on ScotlandsPeople for the birth of an Elizabeth Gunn,(Betty, Betsy, Bessie) to Donald Gunn and Barbara Morrison, but no luck.  That's not to say she is not there!

Here are the dates of the other children recorded at Eddrachillis:
Benjamin 17th November 1820
William 15th January 1822
Ann 11th Februaary 1824
Catherine 20th February 1827
John 20th June 1829

Donald Gunn and Barbara Morrison had banns called in Durness 4th February 1820 and in Eddrachillis, 4th February 1820.

Some of the records you are seeing in the IGI are submissions and don't seem to appear on the OPR index in ScotlandsPeople.

For a variety of reasons, OPR records are not complete, lack of parents registering, records destroyed, sesion clerks/ministers not recording, etc. etc.    Good idea to read the bit on the GROS website, gives you a fair idea of matters.

http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/hlpsrch/opr.html

Runner gives good advice.  It's an idea to go through the OPR films.  Very time consuming, but can be rewarding.  I found a previous unknown child in my family, purely because she had been registered in one district under father's name of Patrick and in another under father's name Peter.

Thanks for the information Dorothy.
Do all the LDS family centres have access to the film data.? Do I make an appointment with the details I have?.
I live a very long way from my nearest LDS but will make the journey if I have a resonable expectation of finding the information.

Thanks  wini

Hi Wini,

I am not particularly qualified to tell you that.  Living within close proximity to Edinburgh and having local facilities, never have used an LDS centre.

If you go to the familysearch website, it will give you details of what you can expect to find in their offices and what to do about ordering in films.   Probably best to telephone the nearest office and find out exactly what they can do for you.

http://www.familysearch.org

Go to Family Search Questions and you should find the information you are looking for.

Dorothy
