The collection of wills has been expanded Grin

Quote
The PCC Wills held by the Public Record Office, many of which are available on DocumentsOnline, cover the period up to 1858. Until that date, all wills had to be proved (formally approved) by church and other courts. The Prerogative Court of Canterbury, the most important of these courts, dealt with the relatively wealthy individuals living mainly in the south of England and most of Wales (what was originally the ecclesiastical province of Canterbury).

PCC stands for Prerogative Court of Canterbury.

How much is available?
You can now access the entire collection of PCC wills on DocumentsOnline, comprising more than 1 million wills covering the period 1384 to 1858. You can search the wills by first and last names, place, occupation and date.

1384 – 1858 – complete

An absolutely absorbing site,  searching the index is free, but it costs £3 to download a digital image of a document.

I'm interested in a more recent will - perhaps 1940s or 1950s.  Is there an index of these?  If so, can it be searched on-line?

Hi,

I am not an expert so I did a Google search and what I found is that it seems to depend on the area you are in.  Try the record office for the area,  it seems to me that solicitors hand over records to record offices after a specified time,  I don't know what this may be.  I will continue to search and let you know if I find anything useful,

I felt a bit guilty having you search for the info that I wanted.  I had a look and I hope that I've found it.  There doesn't appear to be anything on line but the information is available.

I still can't work out if the 'district' offices only hold stuff from their area or do they have everything.

This is the place but I can't do a 'link'.

As far as I know there is no on-line search for Wills which are so recent as the 1940's / 1950's.

Some Counties keep a local district Probate Registry from 1858 to possibly 1970. (you would need to check in the area you are interested in)

Copies from 1858 onwards are kept at The Probate Department of the Principal Registry of the Family Division, Somerset House, London.
