Ballydermody
« on: Sunday 25 December 05 21:27 UTC (UK) »

Could someone please help me to see if I am on the right path?
Is the Townland of Ballydermody within the district of Kilmeadon Civil Parish of Reisk and the Catholic Parish of Portlaw County Waterford?
Also does the Townland of Ballydermody still exist or have they changed the name?
I would appreciate any help on this subject.

Thank you,

Pam........Sydney Wink

Pam,
It seems to be in the civil parish of Reisk as you say. Not sure about the Catholic parish - I've looked at several sites- this one has some info:
http://www.waterfordcountylibrary.ie

and also http://www.seanruad.com
Good luck

Many thanks Heywood. I think this townland is only appx 5 miles from Waterford City so based on todays demographics chances are that it has been absorbed into new residential areas. I guess only a local would know.

Happy New Year.

Hi again- have you seen this site- it might be something to do with you as it is Irish/Australian- assuming that 'Sydney' means the place!

Thank you Calpe and Dancinanne,
Since my posting and Christopher's replies I have since visited Fenor and Dunhill and have made contact with a cousin who I found there. We both believe that we are related, however the only way to really determine this is  to take a DNA test. We will not however be going to do this. It was great to meet up with my newly found cousin who took us to Ballydermody and Ballylegat as well as the cemetery in the churchyard at  Dunhill. It was a great point in my time. I collected a stone from Ballydermody and bought it home with me as reminder of where my g.g.grandfather was from. He was born in 1799.
I would really like to know more of my Dower family from this area but I feel I may have come as far as I can.
I notice that you have the Power crest on your postings, would this be who you are related to in Ballydermody?

Thank you for your interest.

My cousins (lots Smiley ) are based in Ballydermody, Dunabrattin and Kill, my Power line i managed to trace back to 1826, from Dunabrattin. With the Irish records it's difficult  Sad to go back any further, unless someone can advise me otherwise

Direct from my first cousin:-
The townland of Ballydermody still exists.
All townlands, villages, etc., remain in existance whatever happens.
Ballydermody is in the parish of Fenor or as the Church calls it the Parish of Dunhill & Fenor - it's a joint parish.
Reisk and Fenor might have beeen tied up at some stage.
However, it was never involved with Portlaw which is about twelve miles away.
Reisk and Fenor are just down the road. Wink Smiley Cool

See www.seanruad.com to find townlands and parishes in Ireland (be sure to change default setting from exact match to search part of a word).

Griffith's Valuation might also be useful (you can search by name or place):

Hi Calpe,
I thought I would recommend to you a site www.foleyhome.net and scroll down on the lefthand side of the page to Bob Rockett's Story. It is a good read. Bob is the cousin we met when in Ireland the time before last. He lives in Islandtarsney, Fenor which is not too far away from Ballydermody. Bob's mother was Julia Dower and her father was John Dower. However this was in the 1860 time frame. Bob cannot go back any further than this as his parents did not have much to say of the Dower line for whatever reason.  My g,g,grandfather was John Dower who together with his brother Martin were found guilty of highway robbery and sentenced to life as a convict in Australia. He was one of the "chosen" immigrants. We cannot find out as to who their father was but we think it was Laurence Dower from Ballydermody and this would also be Bob's line. As you are aware to find any details of this association at that time is basically impossible. I have all the information from a newspaper report of the trial up until he died, and that is also a mystery for I cannot find where he is buried. Just thought you may wish to read Bob's story and the picture of the house is where his sister lives today with the house being in the family since the late 1700's. I met his sister at that time.
