1851 census query
« on: Thursday 24 July 08 20:59 BST (UK) »

Hi
I am confused, the 1851 census for my relatives lists

John WILLIAMSON            head  1787  Whitwick, Leicestershire
Catherine WILLIAMSON   wife 1795 Sibson, Leicestershire
Aron WILLIAMSON            son 1829 Whitwick, Leicestershire
Johnathon WILLIAMSON   son 1832 Whitwick, Leicestershire
David WILLIAMSON           son 1834 Whitwick, Leicestershire
Ann WILLIAMSON             daughter 1836 Whitwick, Leicestershire
Catherine WILLIAMSON    daughter 1842 Whitwick, Leicestershire
Thomas WILLIAMSON        inmate 1823 Whitwick, Leicestershire
Catherine WILLIAMSON     inmates wife 1824 Whitwick, Leicestershire
William Smith WILLIAMSON    inmates son 1850 Whitwick

The confusing part is that THOMAS WILLIAMSON (inmate) was the son of JOHN and CATHERINE, so why is he listed as inmate? any suggestion why this may be are appreciated

Greeting’s & Welcome …Sue.

Yes…. I can see why it’s confusing...... Huh
If you have not seen this form of putting that there was two families within the same household carrying out the same occupation that of Frame Work Knitters

In other ways John was the head of the household and  the business
And Thomas was his right hand man……

Inmate usually is for Hospital patient or prisoner

I hope this explains it for you ?

MIKE.
