hi
   looking for marriages of charles barnes.
in 1881 census he was living at 44 knutsford street balsall heath
birmingham with a lodger ellen haydon.
on my grandfather joseph arthur  b/cert who was born september 1881 which was after census it says mother ellen rouse. still living at knutsford street
i have found him again on 1891 census it says charles barnes head
alice wife
son joseph arthur aged 9 and henry aged 2 living at 9 bradford street birmingham
he must have married twice but i can't find a marriage with eighther of these
                  can anyone help

Are you sure that Charles was married to Ellen Rouse - if Joseph Athur was born Sept 1881 and at time of 1881 census he was in same house as Ellen Heydon - where was Ellen or is Ellen Heydon also Ellen Rouse?Was his place of birth the same as in the census?
Have you though that Joseph might have been born out of wedlock and that he later married Alice whoever?
The only Ellen Rouse I came up with is as below
Name Ann GREEN Relationship Head Condition W

4. Name Edward ROUSE Relationship Son In Law Condition M Gender M Age 23 Occupation Layer Out China Birthplace Worcester, England Address No 28 House Mill Street, Worcester St Peter, Worcester, England PRO ref RG11/2918 Folio 88

But she is married to Edward Rouse
Which doesn't  help at all does it?
Have you looked at 1837.online to find marriage? - I know you have to pay but it is not much - you might be able to narrow it down a bit
