Looking for Janet Simpson, daughter of George Simpson, born about 1834 Dunbarton according to the 1871 and later census. She married John Blair in Durham in 1861, at the time she was living in Shinfield, Durham. Would love to find her in the earlier census and find out more about her birth - particularly trying to find out who her mother might have been. Any help gratefully received.
Happy Hogmanay!
Gill

If it's any help the Scottish naming pattern usually went like this-Eldest Son -Father's Father's name Eldest Daughter-Mother's Mother's name 2nd Son-Mother's Father's name 2nd Daughter-Father's Mother's name. Obviously not set in stone but it does give clues as to which set of parents is the right one.

Thank you for that Joette, bearing that in mind Isobel Beveridge looks most likely but I'm not sure why she would say she was born in Dunbarton if she came from Edinburgh - I guess they could have moved when she was very small.

Hello Gill,
ScotlandsPeople shows a Janet Simpson born in 8th June 1834 to a George Simpson and Isabel Ferguson in Alloa. Alloa is in Clackmannanshire, not too close to Dunbartonshire but who knows ....
There are several entries for this family in the IGI including LDS subsmissions so maybe you will find something there that looks familiar.
Also, on the 1851 census for Castle Eden, Durham, there is a 17 year old Janet Simpson, a servant to an Edward Boydell. Her birthplace is not shown, entry just says British Subject which indicates that she was not born in England anyway.
regards,
Lindsay

Thank you Lindsay.
I had found Janet Simpson in Castle Eden - I am pretty sure she is 'my' Janet. I will look at the IGI - the name Isabel is a family name - wish me luck!
