Here's an interesting link..
http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/
Not quite sure what the coverage is but it appears to be an online index for records held by the National Archive of Scotland. Stick in a surname or place and it brings up some cracking finds. Obviously you need to get access to the full records to see the full entry.
The main site for NAS has been posted before but here you go...
www.nas.gov.uk/familyHistory/ (Link Above)
An example entry... Precognition against Walter Carruthers, Samuel Fisher, Thomas Robertson, Alexander McGregor, Joseph Campbell for the crime of malicious mischief at Strathaven, Lanarkshire
It also seems to list a lot of modern divorces!
Cheers, Pam

You are correct about the divorces! Including my father in laws' first wife divorcing her second husband.

Many of you already use this search but I thought I'd highlight that the index has expanded quite a lot over the years. The search results for crimes the AD14 series, now give information so you know if you are on the right tracks.
Specifically, it gives both the accused and victim details.
eg...
What you used to get: Precognition against Alexander Telfer for the crime of theft, habit and repute at East William Street, Edinburgh
Additional fields now given: Alexander Telfer, alias Telford, junior. Son of surgeon in Royal Navy, Age: 15, Address: Carnegie Street, Edinburgh, with father
Very useful.

Thank you for providing your example of Alexander Telfer alias Telford of Edinburgh. I have been looking for him for years. From the improved information I was in no doubt that this was the one I was looking for.
Although the Edinburgh Court of the Judiciary records of trials for that year are not on-line and I could not read up on his trial, from the information in the NAS website I was able to to trace him as a convict to Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania).
The Archives Office of Tasmania have an outstanding digital collection and I was able to make tremendous progress. Also with information from the digital archives of the Australia national newspaper archives.

Again, thanks!
