Bodle's of Hailsham, Ringmer and Alfriston
« on: Monday 13 September 04 02:10 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
I am trying to find out information on the Bodles of the Ringmer, Hailsham and Alfriston area.  In particular I am trying to find a link between the Bodles of Alfriston and Hailsham.  My lineage inlcudes:

Jane Bodle (b 1806, Hailsham) m Edward Foord (b 1797, Westham) in Westham in 1821 (their grave is at the back of Westham parish church in case anybody is interested).
Jane was the daughter of
Edward Bodle (chr 1767, Wilmington) m Elizabeth Stretton and then Harriett Sinnock
John Bodle (chr 1736, Wilmington) m Mary Verrall
John Bodle (chr 1712, Hailsham) m Elizabeth
Edvardus Bodle m Jana Alchorne

I have been gathering quite a bit of information on the Bodles from this area and am intrigued by a couple of individuals.  The first is Brigadier-General William Bodle (b 1855 in Alfriston and died 1924 in Alfriston) who was very high up in the British South Africa Police.  He fought in the Boer War and is mentioned in several newspaper articles of the time.  His obit was posted in the Times of London in 1924.  The second individual is Richard Bodle (Born: 23 December 1816, Alfriston, Sussex; Died: 26 January 1869, Southampton, Hampshire).  He played country cricket for Sussex and Hampshire between 1838 and 1849!
If anybody has more information to share on these individuals (or any Bodles of the Ringmer, Alfriston, Hailsham and Wilmington area), I would be most grateful.

I would also like to find out how Jane Bodle ended up in Westham and married Edward Foord (I have a hypothesis that I am working on which involves the Sinnock and Crowhurst families - but I'll save that for another post).

Regards

Mark

Hi there mnmilt

Do you have the information from the 1841 and 1851 census for your Bodle ancestors in Hailsham, Ringmer and Alfriston.

If not, I would be happy to supply you with same for named ancestors

Chris,
Thanks for the offer.  Previously (on another message board - Genealogy.com) you have provided me with the information from the 1851 census.  I would be interested in any information on Bodles in the 1841 census.

Regards

Mark

Chris,
May thanks for the information.  It was most helpful.  I have a few questions that you may be able to help me with.  Firstly, Annie Bodle (Milton Street, Hailsham) is listed as age 42 and IND.  Can you confirm that the age is 42 (all other ages are rounded to the nearest 5).  What does IND mean?  Secondly, please can you look for Henry and Jone Bodle (Summer Heath, Hailsham) in the 1851 census?  Lastly, can you provide me with the details of the Bodle families in Alfriston in the 1841 census?

Thanks

Hi Mark

Yes, that is correct, Annie is shown as 42 - it wasn't rounded down. Looking at neighbours, it seems that almost one person in each house did not have their ages rounded down - enumerator goofed?
Her occupation is shown as Independant - which usually means she had a private income from stock, shares, investments etc.

Unfortunately, the 1851 for Hailsham does not list a Henry & Jane Bodle - sorry

Got to do a few errands, but will do the Alfriston Bodle 1841 details on my return

My Bodle interests:

Part 1

I have an interest in James Bodle, the brother of Brigadier-General William Bodle (mentioned in the first message) .

The 1901 census of Harrow On the Hill, Middlesex shows William and James living in Harrow on the Hill, Middlesex.

Eliza M Bodle/31/Shotley,Suffolk,England/Wife
James Bodle/43/Alfriston,Sussex,England/Head
William Bodle/45/Alfriston,Sussex,England/Brother
Agnes C Smith/20/Shotley, Suffolk,England/Wifes Sister

Eliza Mary Smith and Agnes Caroline Smith were my Grandmothers sisters.  I am hoping that someone has information regarding the descendants of James & Eliza.

Part 2

The "All about Sussex" website has the following information regarding the terminal at the Shoreham Airport:

Designed by Stavers Hessell Tiltman and built by James Bodle Ltd, construction of the art-deco terminal building began in October 1934 on a disused World War I airfield, which had previously been used for grazing.

The web address is http://www.allaboutsussex.co.uk/default.asp?id=placestovisit35
Select the "i" button to see information regarding the terminal.

Does anyone know about this James Bodle?

Hope someone can help.   Thanks,   Vicki

Hi there Victorious

Welcome to Rootschat and especially the Sussex Boards

We hope that we can help further your research into your Bodle ancestors here in Sussex.

Saying that, unfortunately I do not have any of the info that you require except perhaps the entries in most of the census returns - I rpresume you have most of that anyway.

If I can help you, please ask
